device discovery comes back with no results

I am running IP monitor Version: 9.0 build 1236
on windows server 2K3 SP2 and when I use discovery to scan a subnet I don't get any results. I can see that SNMP gets replies from devices while the scan is being performed, but in the next screen I get 'No devices have recently been found'.

The Windows Event viewer reports the following:

SolarWinds Discovery Service

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( SolarWinds Discovery Service ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Service started.

Does anyone have a clue why this happens?

  • Hi ahassiotis,

When you get to the Network Scan results, where it says 'No devices have recently been found', do you see a JavaScript error at the bottom-left of your web browser?  If you are using Internet Explorer, this will be a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark.  If so, can you double-click and tell me what it says?

    Thank you in advance,

  • I don't get an error, just the usual 'Done'.

Do you suggest I use Mozilla?

COuld it be sthg to do with the fact that the machine is a VM?

  • Hi Ahssiotis,

What IP range are you scanning?

Can you try a few different smaller ranges and see what the results are?

    Let me know.

  • Tried different 10. and 192. ranges, usually /24. I now also tried scanning 10 hosts .1 to .10 and i get the same..

  • is there any more information on how to get the discovery to show up correctly?

  • Hi All,

    1. The first thing I recommend is make sure you are running the latest version.  At this time, the latest version is ipMonitor 9.06.
    2. The second thing is to try adding a Device.  You can do this by going to the Devices tab and clicking "Add -> Add New Device".
    • If this does not find anything for you, you are likely looking at a communication problem.
    • If this does find resources, the problem may be with the discovery. If so, try the following:
      1. Stop the ipMonitorSrv and Solarwinds Discovery services.
      2. Move the following files to a backup folder:
        • C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\SolarWinds\DiscoveryEngine\*.*
        • c:\program files\solarwinds\ipmonitor\config\networklist.x
        • c:\program files\solarwinds\ipmonitor\config\networkscan.x
      3. Start the ipMonitorSrv and Solarwinds Discovery services.
      4. Login to the ipMonitor web inteface and run the network discovery wizard.
      5. On step 2, click "Advaned Settings" and set the timeout to 4 seconds.
      6. Specify a small IP range and proceed with the remaining steps.

Does it now find systems and their resources?
