    Rapid spanning tree problem?

I have cisco switches as my layer 3 core and 3com as my layer 2 server access. Each 3com is attached to two different distribution switches and spanning tree is supposed to sort it out. I have however noticed that the 3com's run rapid spanning tree by default and the cisco's are running PVST. Orion is reporting the ports on the 3com switches that attach to the cisco's as having very high levels of recieve discards (1000's per hour). Are these two facts related? There is only one VLAN and all ports are Gb full duplex.
