SQL versions, truncating tables and Orion DB maintenance

I have read various messages on Thwack from time to time about the ruggedness of the Orion DB maintenance procedures as DB tables grow in size. I know ther are truncation queries that can be run to shrink tables so that Orion can handle them during maintenance.

Are there any rules of thumb as to how large tables must get before the truncation procedure is needed? Does it depend in any way on the version of SQL you use? What other factors effect how and when the truncation is needed?

      Thanks for the input.
