POLLING INTERFACES FOR UP/DOWN STATUS

I need to be able to query interfaces on my routers/switches and report/alert on their state.  I understand that I can utilize the bandwidth monitor to measure....bandwidth....but on some interfaces I don't care about their bandwidth consumption.  It is important to us that we know immediately if an interface goes down.

I can not simply create another ping monitor for each interface that I want to poll because some interfaces are in multi-link bundles where the ip address is assigned to the logical interface and not the physical ones.  I also want to monitor layer 2 interfaces which very simply don't have ip addresses.

Please let me know if there is a way to do this.
