        1. The Service Manager, with the events open...I've notice that on doing multiple refreshes, I've had the Manager lock up...had to kill in Task Manager...this happen a number of times yesterday....

        2. Last night we had a number of down alerts...the came back during our reboot period (3 to 5am)...at 5, all the downs were reported...they were not down...I rebooted Orion and they all came back...wondering if a service got in a weird state...if this happens again, I will check for that..

Have you opened Support tickets?  Our top priority is fixing any v9 issues, but we have to prioritize those that have a Support ticket.

Upgrading from 8.5 to 9, after .net 3.5 installed and rebooted It installed with no issues. When running the configuration wizard I got the following error:

"The current user has not be assigned a valid default database. Use SQL Management tools to create a new database, and then assign it as the default database for the current user"

I called support and they quickly had me delete a default registry key and rerun the configuration wizard. Worked just fine.

After another failure of Orion 9 with Netflow 3 last night at the same time: 12:11am, we are trying to fall back to 8.5.1 but we are getting the error:  Cannot add index (IX_custompollerassignment_pollerID) to CustomPollerAsssignment....

                Great News,

Solarwinds says the only way to roll back to Orion 8.5.1 is to restore the Database.

                  WHAT

WooHoo! no thnx, then I would lose the data I have been collecting from the last week of the parts of Orion that DO work!

                    Yeah, nothing new here.

I'm still waiting to hear from SW as to how they are going to fix Orion 9 with netflow 3.

They said they wanted to work the issue but I can't "run" with a version that crashes everyday.

As of now we can't go back to 8.5.1 untill the database is restored.

And this is what I got when I requested:

When is Solarwinds ever going to fix their Database Manager to not require SA rights???!!! When is Solarwinds ever going to fix their Database Manager to not require SA rights???!!!

Ok Sorry, very frustrated but the last upgrade and this one have not gone as smoothe as planned.

                      • 58. Re: V9 Upgrades - Let's here the stories

Overall my upgrade went very smoothly.  I'm guessing that is mostly due to the fact that we just moved from SL100 to SLX a month ago and installed everything on a new server.  I'm sure the newness of the install helped a lot.

The only glitch I had was when I launched the install it said I had to upgrade my VoIP monitor because ver. 1.0 was not supported.  I guess I missed the install note that said you had to be on VoIP 2.0 SP2.  Problem is I was on VoIP 2.0 SP1, not ver 1.0.  So I guess the installer identified my VoIP 2.0 SP1 incorrectly as VoIP 1.0.   I fixed the issue by loading VoIP 2.0 SP2.  After that the install ran just fine.

                         Thanks

My upgrade also went through without any major issues.  We have noticed that the X-axis on the graphs seems to have a mind of its own but that is very well documented in another thread.

The upgrade took about 30 minutes on a SL2000 Poller with about 2700 total elements.  We upgraded from 8.5.1 SP3 and this same poller has been upgraded several times over the years so it isn't really what I would call a fresh server.  We are also running the APM 1.0 SP2 and this did not need to be reinstalled and functions normally after the upgrade.

The universal poller is extremly useful and has saved me at least 2 hours worth of management time for one of our devices.

                           Thanks,

I ran into the same thing, still upgrading now, but had me frustrated to no end. Finally a reboot solved it.

Addendum: The install went OK, had a few glitches with VOIP monitor, but after I figured out that part, the rest of the install went smooth, no crashes, no unusual abnormalities, and I noticed the web front speed has improved, still no where near the speed of version 7, but much better than version 8.0. The addition of Node management to the web is a huge leap forward for Orion, something that has been sorely needed, and it works! All it needs now is Alert management from the web and it would be perfect.

An update to the problem of loss of polling...

I had everything go "unknown" this morning, so naturally, the alerts I have set for things being up shot off, and nearly killed my boss!....I stopped and started all the SolarWinds services, and everthing poll "up" again...it seems like it started after I got an APM and NPM started message....I sure as heck don't want to downgrade...does anyone know what service controls these?...I could script a stop and start to maybe control this problem...seems like it only happens once a day...

                                      Another issue to report now.

Custom properties for alerts are not working. I have custom alerts setup and custom properties in these alerts and after the upgrade the alerts are no longer working when we have device go down. I am able to test fire alerts just fine, email and everything else works when I test. When I actually have an alert get triggered the alert does not fire off an email or anything else only shows up in the alert window that there was an alert but no email sent out. Not sure what is going on with this now. I have recreated the alert from scratch to see if that would resolve this and it has not.

                                      I have submitted a ticket 50637

Back to square one nothing working the way it is suppose to or was prior to Ver. 9 upgrade.

Universal Poller will not install correctly or run, Adavanced alerts not working sending emails.

I am working with support on getting this fixed but I really don't think we are doing anything out of the ordinary with our setup.

HP server quad Processor, Installation directory is on a different drive then OS and database is on a SQL server 2005 cluster.

after we made v9 upgrade, our orion web console takes some time to enable tree view mode. it's doing "loading," even in netflow. anyone one has ideas to speed up this "loading" process? thanks in advance!

Forward Traps and Syslog and retain the source IP Address of the original device

This feature does not seem to be working.  When I forward a syslog message to the Kiwi Syslog Daemon running on another server it puts the IP address of the Orion server, not the original device.

Is this happening in all views?  Or only in NTA?  Are you running NTA 3.0?  The asynchronous loading is a performance feature of the NetFlow module.

Now that V9 is out I wanted to start a thread on how upgrades from 8.5.X to 9 have been going?  I'm especially interested in people running multiple pollers.

I'm going to wait a could weeks before I upgrade so the bleeding edge folks can work out any issues. ;-)

First off, it's definitely a wise choice to wait a bit before upgrading, especially if you have a somewhat complicated Orion configuration.  Mine is pretty vanilla - one poller, separate SQL server, polling about 5500 elements.  I took part in the beta and could not wait to install v9 because of the Universal Device Poller, which makes setting up custom pollers so much easier (but still needs some improvement).

My upgrade went pretty well, it took about 1/2 hour to upgrade a 5.5GB database.  I can't say there were any show-stoppers for me, which is unusual because my installation always seems to have some major problem after upgrading.  Found a couple more bugs, but nothing that prevents Orion from doing its job.  That said, wait until the first service pack before upgrading, if not the second.  The only real reason to upgrade is the UnDP and if you're not absolutely itching to get that functionality, the rest of the cosmetic bugs in this first release are not worth the headaches they will likely cause you.

                                                  • 72. Re: V9 Upgrades - Let's here the stories

Found a few more bugs...can't set color scheme...just stays gray...also, when setting up, say, a menu bar...make a change and submit...get a "page cannot be displayed"...go back, click on something else, then try to change the bar again, and it works (or not)...it's all very random...

I'm getting the feeling that things will not be fixed quickly, so does anyone know how to go back to 8.5.1?

Just out of curiosity, what gives you this impression?  SW typically comes out with an SP for most opened bugs within a few weeks of a new release.  If you haven't opened a ticket on your issues yet, I would do so as soon as possible so they can investigate why this is occurring to your installation.

It's my understanding that to go back to 8.5.1, you need to restore your database from the last 8.5.1 backup.  If you don't have a backup or your backup is too old for you to not want to lose the newly gathered data, you cannot just rollback.
