Seeing 220MB throughput from a 200MB interface (What's the problem)

You can see our MRTG screen shot below and you don't see it going over 200MB during the exact same time frame.

For what it's worth I'm seeing similar results with one of our 20mb Internet circuits. I occasionally receive alerts that the current interface RX rate is at 125% utilization.

Since so many people are seeing interface utilization above 100% there has to be something within Orion.  I would first think it’s a device settings about the bandwidth size, but since our MRTG looks to be perfect I would think the problem is only with Solar.  I have looked at the details of the interface and it sees it as 200MB which is correct.  What else can it be?

I've seen similar results, but not quite so far over the interface speed.

I wonder if this could be related to the polling interval not being exactly as set for each interface?
If the interface is meant to be polled every 300 seconds, but the poller grabs the interface counter after only 320 seconds, then the DB could have a value higher than expected for this interval. This is just a wild guess, I really don't know how the counter info is calculated based on the statistics collection interval. Perhaps if you ran the Polls Per Second tuner & increased your statistics polling number, this would be resolved?

I'm currently using 84 per second on Node and Interface Status and 45 per second on the Statistics Collections.

The only other time I have seen this is on an ATM circuit.
We have several ATM PVC's which are either 10, 30 or 100mbps.
Due to the nature of the PVCs and PIRs/CIRs, it is possible to exceed the assigned bandwidth.

However, in your case, since MRTG displays the "correct" data, it is most likely a polling/stats issue.
 

I don't have MRTG setup but noticed several of my links over utilized as displayed in Orion.  Can anyone from Solarwinds comment on how the bandwidth is calculated?  I would think that getting the data from the device would return actual data for that exact moment.

I find this issue all the time also, actually. MRTG will display what we think is correct, and our FlukeNetwork's Netflow Analyzer and Orion will display different values entirely from each other, both over utilizing the circuit.
