Tracking down a device by the mac address

If I only have a MAC address, is there a way to track down the IP address or resolve the name?
  • Depending on the layout of your network, you could do an ARP lookup from one of your routers.. This will give you an IP address. With the IP address, you should be able to narrow down your search to a particular segment. From there you could run the SW switch port mapper on the switches within the IP segment to find the exact port the host is plugged into. You can also do a trace route once you've resolved the MAC to IP. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks!

I was hoping there would be a tool in solarwinds for this.
