95th Percentile traffic report

Hi,

What does mean "95th Percentile traffic report" in Report writer? What is the use of this report and how to explain ?

Can we use this report for servers as well?

Thanks,

Alan

  • Hi Alan,

the 95th percentile is used to get rid of the spikes in traffic or latency reports. It means that the top 5% do not affect the statistics you are looking at.

    A basic example:

You are pinging a server 10 times. 9 pings with 1ms latency, for 1 ping the server had a hickup -> 991ms latency.

An average value would be 100ms, pretty far away from the real latency it had.

A max value is quite obvious... 991ms.

And for example the 90th percentile would be: 1ms

Because the one high ping is not considered in the 90th percentile statistic.

These Type of reports are useful if a few spikes of traffic, latency or whatever statistic you are looking at would falsify your statistic you are interested in.

There is also a more in depth KB-article from Solarwinds: 95th Percentile Calculations

Also you can edit the XXth percentile globally in the "Web Console Settings" for every charts in your orion environment. However the reports are not affected by this change.

    Best Regards

  • Thanks You so much Rene. Now i understood this report.

If i have below fields then it will calculate the 95th percentile of each receive and transmit BPS and will show the maximum traffic from both the data.

    1. Receive BPS

    2. Transmit BPS

    3. Maximum BPS
