Orion Server Hardware best Model

We are planning to do our SolarWinds server hardware refresh. Any specific best model (latest) for the sever.?

  • Hi there,

What server hardware are you using now and which Orion modules are implemented?

  • Hi, we have the below spec now

    Model : HP ProLiant DL360 Gen9, 32gb RAM, Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2620 v3 @ 2.40GHz (2 processors)

Orion modules are : SRM, SAM, DPAIM , VIM , QoE , Toolset , NetPath , NPM, NTA , WPM, NTM.

    Thanks

  • What you describe seems like a good baseline for matching newer hardware. I'd go for the same hardware or better when getting a newer server.

Do keep in mind though, that you can get much better performance if you split the applications in use on to several servers. You haven't mentioned whether everything, including the SQL server, is running on the above mentioned server hardware. If so, are you running it on bare metal or are you running multiple VMs on this hardware?

    1x SQL Server VM

    1x Orion Server VM

If everything is running on the same server, I'd advise to run it virtually and make sure that you have fast underlying storage - SSD's recommended.

Then make sure that the SQL server is running SQL Server 2016 SP1, so that you can use the new Orion NTA version that supports SQL. That way you will avoid having to run an NTA Flow Storage Database server and keep you total server count down to 2.

  • Make sure to follow the multi-module guidelines and you should be good.
