AppInsight for SQL on 2 servers created 200 000 components

I have an interesting situation at a customer.

We have AppInsight for SQL on 34 servers, the issue thought is with 2 of them.

As you all know, AppInsight for SQL is great, and dynamic. Creating a lot of polling point per database. It's nice. BUT, on these 2 SQL servers there is a total of 7000 databases. 7000 times a lot of polling point per db give us more than 200 000 monitored components!!

Support said: "you need more APE's"..... sure how to split one AppInsight on several APE's.

As you can see, this is not something that can be solved with more APE's. But is there a limitation on AppInsight for SQL on how many db's per instance you may have? Just counting components per polling engine don't work here. Does Solarwinds support this?

Does it work? Yes. Normal usage have no issue with 217000 components on that single orion server. But when we change the AppInsight SQL template, orion is sluggish for half an hour or so.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

  • I had a shared SQL box with loads of little DBs for lots of app, on three instances for that server and the same thing happened. I choose not to use AppInsight for SQL with it. I got some stats out of other SAM templates for SQL and some from DPA.
    I wish I had a better suggestion, but I don't.
