Free Space on Solarwinds Orion database

Hi Team,

Free Space available on database manager is showing ~ 3GB, while on database and application  server much more space is available.

Can someone please explain....

  • What you're seeing in the screenshot above is the amount of whitespace in the database. This isn't 'free' space in the respect that it's the total amount of remaining space on the drive. It's wasted space in the database that isn't being used for anything. This is perfectly normal and expected for any/all databases. If this number was very high (tens or hundreds of gigs) then I would recommend shrinking the database.

  • So if this 'free space available'  becomes very low, i.e in MBs will it affect in any way to the performance ?

  • No, the white space in the database will likely grow.  So think of free space as unused space in a block.  The block takes up storage space, but the entire block may not be filled.  So over time you get free/white space that will continue to grow.  Over time as mentioned above you may want to perform a shrink on your database which will reclaim the unused white space.
