Reporting Metrics

I am new to Solarwinds. I'm currently trying to answer a simple question, but I am frustrated with my current understanding of Solarwinds. What I want to know is exactly how much memory (actual data value, in megabytes, gigabytes, etc.) is in use when a virtual machine is polled. I would also like to know how much memory is available to the VM. The performance analyzer offers all sorts of aggregate metrics - average, max, min, etc. Where can I look at the raw data from which those are derived?

  • Hello! Thank you for reaching out with this question.

I'm going to use the interactive orion demo to walk through this scenario using one of my favorite troubleshooting flows.

Say you have a virtualmachine that you know is named... EAST ... something or other

Look to the upper right hand corner and type in the name into the search

Expand the filter on the left to narrow down the type of entity to virtual machine. http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/ui/search?q=east

click on the virtual machine you're looking to investigate http://oriondemo.solarwinds.com/Orion/VIM/VMDetails.aspx?NetObject=VVM:296

You can see some basic details right off the bat in the virtual machine details and the gauges

You can also compare the memory utilization reported by VMware's api being shown for host & vm at the same time on the resource utilization widget

Now you asked about using PerfStack -> here's a handy trick, just click the "Performance Analyzer" link on that resource utilization  widget. This will open up PerfStack with those same metrics prepopulated for the virtual machine.

At this point, this should give you a template for massaging the metrics if you wanted to add in the metrics for the host, just expand out the metric palette and select the virtual host and start grabbing the memory metrics to compare with what's already been prepopulated for the vm
