Operating System Upgrade vs Server Migration 2008 to 2012

Apologies if this has been asked before but my searching has come up with limited results.

We are currently running NPM 12.1 with NCM 7.6 on a windows 2008 R2 VM as our front end - our database server is 2012 with SQL 2008 R2

Our Front end is virtual and has plenty of resource, performance is not an issue.

We wish to upgrade to NPM 12.2 and trial SAM 6.6 for monitoring our server estate - however, we need to move to server 2012 (or above to achieve this)

My question is; can we just run the upgrade on the current front end server as opposed to building out a new server and migrating?

      have people done this before?

      any success/horror stories?
