Recently our enterprise team upgraded our WSUS servers to Windows 2016, but neglected to copy permissions from the old server, so now I can't reconnect our Patch Manager to it. Our Patch manager is still running on Windows 2012 R2. So I have a couple of questions. Are there any known communication issues between PM running on Windows 2012 R2 and WSUS running on Windows 2016? What permissions does the PM service account need on the WSUS server in order to connect to it? Thanks for your help!

WSUS server on Windows 2016

Recently our enterprise team upgraded our WSUS servers to Windows 2016, but neglected to copy permissions from the old server, so now I can't reconnect our Patch Manager to it. Our Patch manager is still running on Windows 2012 R2.

So I have a couple of questions.

Are there any known communication issues between PM running on Windows 2012 R2 and WSUS running on Windows 2016?
What permissions does the PM service account need on the WSUS server in order to connect to it?

I have it reverse with a PM server 2016 and a WSUS 2012 R2 and I needed to put an automation server on the WSUS server to get it to communicate. I would think you will need one there as well

In my training lab I had a 2012 R2 Patch Manager server communicating with WSUS 2016. As frgpugs mentions the main thing you will need is an automation server. Also, 2016 did need a little help with the publishing certificate:

I did the other way round and had no issues. Domain admin credential is always advised but failing that add to local adminstrators the credential you are using.
