I don't see any problems with that. In that you migrate your current setup to a new server and then perform the upgrade.

The DB has to go through the upgrade steps to update all the tables. But like superfly99 rightly points out you can migrate to a new machine, install the current version of the software that you are running (12.0.1) and connect up to your existing database and then run the new installer, and it will take you all the way from 12.0.1 to 12.2 (assuming the DB is on SQL 2012 or later).
