Deployment methodology

Looking for deployment thoughts on adding servers to Orion after provisioning.  How do ya'all handle new servers that need to be monitored by SNMP?

  • Hey there,

Not sure if this is exactly what you were asking, but the way that we normally add nodes depends on whether it's a single node at a time or multiple. If it's a single, you should have an "Add a Node" button on your homepage. If the button isn't there, go to settings > manage nodes> Add Node. When you do this, one of the first things you can do is set it to ICMP, SNMP, WMI, etc. If you're adding many nodes at once, Network Sonar Discovery is a great help. If you follow the steps, you'll input what your normal SNMP credentials are and it'll test this against the nodes you're scanning. If it's successful, it'll automatically bring the nodes in as SNMP if you decide to import them.

    Hope this helps!

  • That actually helps.  We are going to be provisioning with self service software so we really don't know when or how many servers will be built.  It sounds like we can just have a GPO that contains the SNMP settings for the VM's then have discovery run automatically, say every day at 1am??

  • Yeah, that sounds like a good way to do it to me! Not sure how you have your environment set up, but you can scan certain IP ranges, subnets, specific servers, or integrate it with AD if you're on a newer version. It'll show you the servers it finds under the "Scheduled Discovery Results" tab. Then you can import or make any changes you need from there.
