Device Access Lists and Engineer's Toolset for Desktop

Does Engineer's Toolset for Desktop integrate with your NPM server to reach devices or does it reach them directly from the desktop? Asking due to access lists on our devices that allow only access from the NPM servers. Need to know if access will need to be allowed for the desktop IP.
