How can I monitor Windows RDP Service that hangs in a 'running' status.

Everything I have found on the Microsoft forums indicates that there is no programmatic way to actually test an RDP connection to a remote host, you can test if you get a response on the port, but everything beyond that is invisible.  It is possible to initiate an rdp session from a command line but no status is returned to let you know if the connection was successful or not.  If you are feeling really elaborate maybe you could set up a recurring connection attempt to the server and separately set up a check that looks at the remote systems windows event logs and if the service account didn't connect in over X minutes trigger an alert, but that seems like it would be a beast to set up and maintain unless you just have a short term one off kind of case..

The only other idea that i have had was to setup RD Web access and monitor it with WPM but I contacted SLW support and they told me that was was not possible. I am going to try the template that d09h suggested and see what i can find out.
