Can you post the specific values you use?

For resource alerts, we take the thresholds from the resource metric definition, then apply some logic to those (you don't actually specify a threshold differently within the resource alert).

What value is PLE at that you are expecting an alert on? Is it below 600 or below 300?

It is mostly above 3000.

I setup custom alert instead (using t-sql).

Remember PLE is one of the contrarian indicators (low = bad, high = good)...

select cntr_value

from sys.dm_os_performance_counters

where lower(counter_name) = 'page life expectancy'

and object_name like '%Buffer Manager%'

Basically, I used the same scrip as you have.

SELECT [cntr_value]

FROM sys.dm_os_performance_counters

WHERE [object_name] LIKE '%Manager%'

AND [counter_name] = 'Page life expectancy'

OK, using a custom alert on this one may be tricky as this is an inverted value (you will want to alert when it goes BELOW a certain number).

Any reason not to use the default alert for resources? You can adjust the thresholds globally or for specific instances if you need to customize it a bit.

The reason I resorted to custom alert was because the 'Resources' alerts in DPA could not work for a reason I don't know.

Do you have a step by step guide to set up alert for PLE using default means?

We have general alert creation documents, but not specific to any one alert...
