There is a filter option on the Group Tickets view, but unfortunately it only lets you choose one Status, so you can't choose "all Statuses except for Closed".
What you can do though is create a query like that (Setup -> Tickets -> Search Tickets -> Advanced Search) and save it off with some name.
Then, you can run that query whenever you'd like from the Group Tickets view (it just won't be the default view of that page)
Thanks for the info. I had looked at the Advanced Search options but didn't see the "Status" field option to query the first time. I was able to use the "Status --> is any of --> and select Open and Work in Progress" and that solved my issue.
