Removing SNMP EngineID from Switch takes down SNMP v2 in Solarwinds Orion

We removed the snmp engineid from a Cisco 2924 switch (I know old....lol) with the following command "no snmp-server engineID local (engineID #)".  We did this thinking that it would remove SNMP v3 from the switch and once it was done, Solarwinds Orion was not able to poll the switch anymore using SNMP v2.  Once we added the engineID back onto the switch, Solarwinds was then able to poll the switch again.  Can anyone possibly shed some light on why this happened?  We thought that the engineID had nothing to do with snmp v1/v2.
