Orion /NPM aditionall Polls

Question

Good Morning everyone,

I am rather new to Orion/NPM and I have a question. Our Company monitors some servers through wmi and some using the oriion agent.

With the ones polling through the agent, I've run into a dilemma.

I cant tell if those nodes are down due to:

agent failure

server being down

network being down

So I was wondering:

while setting up these nodes; is there a way to have it test for multiple situations?(ie. If agent doesn't respond, ping the server if that doesn't respond then ping a firewall)

Not really. If you are monitoring the server via agent, then talking to the agent is the only way Orion will monitor the server. However if you are also monitoring the network infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, etc.) in Orion, you can set up Dependencies such that if the firewall goes down, the nodes behind that firewall will be reported as "Unreachable" instead of "Down".
