ipMonitor Trial Version on SNMP Trap

Heard from others who said that ipMonitor Trial Version will have limited features to  receive the SNMP Traps from a network device.

If not, how to check the SNMP Traps received from a network device?

Please help to check.

  • Hello ivantsui,

There are no limitations with SNMP Trap listening in the Trial Version.

In order to listen for SNMP Traps, there are 2 things you must do:

    1. Configure ipMonitor to listen for SNMP Traps on port 162 over UDP.  The Windows SNMP Trap service will need to be disabled for this.
    2. SNMP Trap Monitors need to be configured in order to filter for specific traps that come in.

Both of these steps are oulined on page 148 of the ipMonitor Admin Guide here:

    http://www.solarwinds.com/support/ipMonitor/docs/ipMonitorAdministratorGuide.pdf

If you would like to see all traps that come in, simply open \solarwinds\ipmonitor\logs\snmptrap.log

Hopefully this gives you enough to accomplish what is needed.

  • How to configure the SNMP Trap Monitor?

Which menu I should go to configure to receive the SNMP Trap for a OID object as:

    1.3.6.1.4.1.10734

  • Here's what you do:

    1. Click the "Devices" tab.
    2. Click "All Managed Devices"
    3. Select the Device you wish to add the SNMP Trap Monitor to.
    4. Click "Add -> Add New Monitor"
    5. On the left-hand side, click "SNMP"
    6. On the right-hand side, click "SNMP Trap".
    7. From here, match the settings with the values seen in snmptrap.log that you would like to watch for.
    8. Click "Ok"

In the event that you want to listen for SNMP Traps from different devices, you can create a generic Device within ipMonitor.  Here's  how:

    1. Click the "Devices" tab.
    2. Click "Add -> Add New Device"
    3. For "IP address or hostname", enter "SNMP_TRAPS" (or any value with no spaces)
    4. Insert a check for "Add device immediately without scanning".
    5. Click "Next"

You can now add the SNMP Trap Monitors to this Device.

Let me know if you have any additional questions regarding this.

  • If I could not find the snmptrap.log under the

    c:\Program Files\Solarwinds\ipMontor\logs.

Does this mean that no trap had been received or something may be wrong?

  • My current ipMonitor is installed into a Windows server.

I could not find the snmptrap.log inside the log directory, but I have already followed procedures to add the trap monitor under the monitoried devices.    And I could see one monitor for above configured is below devices is listening.
