Not getting notification when NIC comes back on

I have a bandwidth monitor set on a server (2 NIC).  If I disable the 2nd NIC, I will get an email notification.  When I re-enable the NIC, I won't get any email.  If I go into the monitor and click on "Select" next to Network Interface, I will notice and additional entry w/ NIC 2 (if: xxxxx) and it is is "not listed".  This montior will not turn back on green until I select the one that is listed.

How do I resolve this issue?  Please help

  • Hello xiaobao68,

The first thing that needs to be clarified is that the Bandwidth Monitor will not normally fail if the interface is disabled.  This is due to the fact that the Bandwidth Monitor does not monitor the status of the port, it simply monitors the amount of octets (a.k.a bytes) that have gone through the port since the SNMP agent was last initialized.  As the port is disabled, the number of octets will be static and the difference between the current value and the last value will be 0.  The Bandwidth Monitor has no problem with 0 bytes transfered.

In your specific case, the network interface is being reinitialized and reenumerated.  We can see that by comparing the last value of the OID branch (old value = 65543, new value = 65541).  As a result, the OID being used by the Monitor is no longer valid and therefore failing.  As the OID is no longer valid, it will continue to fail until you give the Monitor a valid interface (OID) to use.

This is why the Monitor is not automatically recovering and sending you a recovery notification.

Hope this helps clarify the issue.

    Sincerely,

  • ty for the great explanations. So if the server goes down, come back up..and I experience the same situation. I will have to manually select the new OID?
