Migrating from a single to 2 ipMonitor installations.

Hello,

We currently have a single ipMonitor installation in our environment (v 9.05). We are interested in splitting this up into 2 installations (v 10). I would be thankful for some assistance on accomplishing this. What would be the best way to copy certain monitors from the old to the new servers, handling dependencies, credentials, accounts, alerts, etc. Is there some documentation on moving from a single to multiple ipMonitor instances?

Thanks!

  • Hello Prafulnama,

There is currently no way to migrate some of the configurations from one ipMonitor installation to another.  Having that said, I recommend simply migrating all of your configurations from one installation to another and then delete the undesired configurations from both installations.  In order to accomplish this, simply follow steps 1 through 11 on the following page:

    http://support.solarwinds.com/kbase/ProblemDetail.cfm?ID=764

Once this is done, License your second ipMonitor installation and delete everything you don't want from both.

Hopefully this gives you what you need.

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for your help! I tried your suggestions but am facing an issue.

I installed ipMonitor v10 on a server and set up a few Monitors. I followed instructions specified in the 'How do I move a licensed ipMonitor 9 installation to a different location?' document to backup the existing installation and to to bring it up on a new server. Both of these are using the 21 day evaluation license. After bringing up the new server, the credentials on it got orphaned so I followed the steps you had outlined at . One of the things that I observed was that in step 5, the command that I had to use was not ipm9config -firstrun ot ipm10config -firstrun but ipmconfig -firstrun. I just clicked Next through the wizard to complete it. I wasn't able to figure out how to reinitialize variables in v10. Could you please let me know how to do that? Anyways, after the wizard completed the 'Orphaned' error message disappeared but the monitors were down with the 'Last Result' showing   either 'Logon Failure' or 'Service context does not have impersonation privileges' so I uninstalled and reinstalled ipMonitor on the 2nd server. Now, the new server is fine but the old one has the same errors.

I would be thankful for your help with this.

  • Hi p,

Sounds like a Backup Credential was not used to make the backup.  Either way, here's how to get out of the situation you are currently in:

    1. Login to ipMonitor.
    2. Click "Configuration -> Credential List"
    3. Open the first Credential
    4. At the top, click "Reinitialize"
    5. Reenter the Username and Password of the Windows Account being used by this Credential.
    6. Check the "Usage Restrictions" that match what this Credential is used for.
    7. Click OK.

Repeat this for every Credential you have that is being used by a Monitor.

If you require additional assitance with this, let me know.

  • Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply. I did create a backup credential and I see that in the system that I restored. This is probably silly but I can't seem to locate the 'Reinitialize' option. Is this something that becomes visible only when the credentials get orphaned?

    Thanks,
