How to monitor a Windows process

Is there a way to monitor an .exe that's running on a Windows server? For example, say I have a process that shows up in the Windows Task Manager as application.exe, can I monitor it with ipMonitor 9.0?

It's not a Windows service, but rather a process that's running on the server.

You can accomplish this using External Process Monitor and custom script. For help writing the script, you might check out the following tool from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=09dfc342-648b-4119-b7eb-783b0f7d1178&displaylang=en

Thanks Chris,

I was able to get it to work for monitoring servers on the same domain as me. Do you know if this will work by monitoring a server on a different domain...say by IP address? I tried it, but it doesn't seem to work.

Hi Bill,

For systems outside of ipMonitor's domain, you will need to replicate a local Windows account on the ipMonitor system and the remote system with the same credentials. Then, setup an ipMonitor Credential to use this local account and assign it to the External Process Monitor. More on this is found here:

Thanks again for the reply. I haven't tested this on another domain, but I think your suggestion will work just fine.

I have my External Process monitor setup, but it's giving me this error "Last Result:The return value does not match the expected value". Any thoughts? I have the Expected Return Value set at 0.

I was wondering if there is any consideration of having IPMonitor monitor Windows processes through different means instead of a script? I don't like the idea of running a script to monitor a process on a critical server. I know Net-SNMP can monitor processes on a Linux server, but there is also Windows Version of Net-SNMP. I installed Net-SNMP on WIndows Server, but I could not get to work with IPMonitor. Has anyone tried this and have it work for them?

I also have 4 processes on my app servers i'd like to monitor, They are all "Java.exe" and run between 240 and 400 megs each on my servers. I'd like to set a thresh hold to alert at anything over 400 megs on these processes. Is this possible?
