Actions based on due date/scheduled date/custom field date not ticket updates

It would be nice if we could have actions that were not evaluated on ticket updates but rather the due date (which is not visible to clients) or some kind of scheduled date/custom field.  We have several events that we do the setup for and they are setup far in advance and we will not update or touch the ticket until we need to do something but want to automate reminders at or around certain intervals.
