IP SLA MOS values

Hello!

I have a question, Is there any advantage or disadvantage in using Orion IP SLA Manager to collect jitter, latency packet loss etc

Over

Using software like VQ Manager - packet sniffing

I know IP SLA is a cisco standard - service level agreement - so that's an advantage, do you know anymore?

And, I was testing IP SLA Manager out in a lab enviornment:

2 ciscorouters, 1 cipc phone and 1 analogue phone
Can ring each other so dial peer ok

Running ospf
bandwidth on serial link - 128kbps
G711a codec
Did ONE voice call - I get a MOS  value of ~2

In theory g711 = 95.2kbps

bandwidth is set to 128kbps, so there is still 25% left, Mos value should be a lot higher than 2

I've changed cables, routers and interfaces... Any ideas anyone?

Thanks,

Noodles

  • To answer your first question, VQManager is only for monitoring VoIP call quality, which is but a subset of the many things you can do with IP SLA.  Orion IP SLA Manager supports VoIP monitoring, but it also supports quite a few other IP SLA operations that can help you assess the health of your network.

One of our developers is taking a look at your second question...
