Question

Hi Steve,

if I understood well then I hope these steps would help you create a new trend that shows total amount of storage per BU:

1) choose a set of VMs you want to include in the trend, i.e. "*" and press "Trend Results" button

2) set Scope, Criteria and Segmentation as follows:
     Scope: no change
     Criteria: Attribute = "/virtualMachine/totalStorageSize"

     Segmentation: "substring(/virtualMachine/name, 1, 3)"  (instead of VM name it's also possible to use Custom Labels, vm.folder or any other attribute)

After that you should see something like this:

You can also export data into XLS via "Save Report" button in "Business Views" module.

The "percentage of whats being used per BU" is quite difficult to implement.

Please let me know if it helps you create sufficient reports.

thanks for your help I will give it a go  ,   when i go to select the servers i lose the trend results tab you have highlighted am I missing a step ..

I selected the 30 servers for one BU and that button went away

Hi, don't select any servers. Just perform an SQL query (either "*" for all VMs or any other SQL formula to get requested servers, i.e. vm.name:"CRP*" OR vm.name:"SQL*") and press "Trend Results" button. Then continue with step 2).

Thanks Milan that worked , I would assume that I would have to set up each BU as its own trend report as I assume the   search query like this one i used   vm.name:"ASC*"      Which give me all the ASC servers  I cant make it a multiple search  ( so not a SQL guy )

Sorry, I didn't get your last reply. You can set up a trend for more BUs. Can't you get all ASC and CRP servers together in the search module? If it's the case then the query is something like this:

vm.name:"ASC*" OR vm.name:CRP*"

and you will get all VMs having ASC or CRP in the beginning of their name.

If I could recommend there are Help pages related to Search (http://www.solarwinds.com/documentation/en/flarehelp/vman/default.htm#svmag_search.htm) and mainly Search Language section (http://www.solarwinds.com/documentation/en/flarehelp/vman/default.htm#svmag_searchlanguage.htm).

You rock , i think i got it - wish it was a little easier for us non - SQL people - but i set up the search for multiple searches and I think its given me what he wants .. I will let it grab some data and see ....
