wach_pollWithing thwack...when I try to create a new Blog, Poll, or Idea there are no unlocked spaces for me to begin.

Is this to be expected...or am I missing something?

This is to be expected.  We are in discussions on how to get these actions removed from the user's view.  Apologies for the confusion!
