Over the past year, I have performed many virtual machine disaster recovery projects using both Site Recovery Manager and Zerto. What I find are most organizations do not have a very detailed recovery plan for their mission critical applications. I most frequently see the servers are simply grouped by generally-accepted criticality tiers and are placed on replicated storage by tier level.
As this is a prerequisite to a successful disaster recovery, I am often asked for the magic bullet tool that can do the discovery for them. There are several tools out there like VMware's vCenter Application Discovery Manager, but in your experience or opinion what are some of the better tools, scripts or processes to:
Determine the application dependancies between servers?
Server shut down and start up order?
Determine server criticality tiers?
Also, is this process a purely infrastructure support component and can this be done without application owner involvement?
