Log & Event Manager Review

Transportation. We're a global chauffer company.

  • How large is your IT shop? (Small (1-250 elements); Medium (251 – 2000 elements); Large (2001 to 10000 elements); Extra-large (greater than 10,000 elements)

We have a small IT shop. Out network team is 4 people, and we have a total IT staff of 20. We have under 200 employees in total.

  • Which SolarWinds product are you writing this review for?

          This review is for

  • What problem were you trying to solve when you purchased?

We purchased as a way to help us monitor our network for any suspicious activity and to comply with PCI guidelines.

  • Did you consider options other than SolarWinds? Who?

We had Solarwinds replace WhatsUpGold. WhatsUpGold cost us nearly twice as much, for a lower quality product. WhatUpGold monitor less of our network, with fewer alerts, and it was more difficult to configure.

  • How are you using the product and what benefits have you seen?

was rather easy to install. We quickly setup the virtual appliance, then installed the nodes, which didn't require a restart. After the quick install we were quickly able to access the dashboard and start monitoring our network.

Overall its a great product. The price was right on it, its easy to install, easy to setup, easy to use, easy to manage. The product meets all of our PCI guidelines and it's actually quite useful. With a short amount of time, you'll soon be able to see anything from using trying to log in with the wrong password, to changes being made on sensitive servers or Active Directory.

Right after the install we actually noticed some suspicious logins from an outside IP address. I was able to do a reverse lookup of the IP address and it was coming from Russia. The IP address was hitting one of our server and trying various usernames like "administrator" "admin" "backoffice" "user" and random passwords. We simply went into our firewall and blocked the IP address and SOLARWINDS SAVED OUR BACON!
