What SW Linux/Unix Agent uses to Collect Network Interface data

I have been trying to find out how the SW Linux/Unix Agent gets the Network Interface data on a node. After some googling I found out that windows uses WMI, but I can't seem to find any information on how it is done in Linux/Unix OS'es. We have som interfaces in our environment that are reporting transmitted utilization of up to 2925% and I want to find out where the SW agent get's this number.
