Services going into unknown state

We have a remote Windows server 2003 running Cisco CVP and according to solar winds the services are going into an unknown state. We have verified the services stay up and running and are not going down. The alert clears itself after about 5-10 minutes then it will randomly happen again.

Does anybody have any suggestions on what could be causing this?

  • Hello,
service monitoring is done through WMI. Service going into unknown means that there was some error with WMI call. It can be either unresponsive machine, WMI authentication error or some other WMI issue. If target machine is under heavy load, there can be a long response time from WMI or it can be unresponsive and this makes service monitor go into Unknown.

Change your alerts to not trigger on "unknown" status, just "down". Service in unknown is not really "problematic" status, it just means that we are not able to get real service status.
