SNMP Unknown on Linux

This might be an easy one to answer, but I need some insight on why something's happening.

I created a Linux monitor to monitor the SNMP service, knowing that if the SNMP service falls over for whatever reason, the monitor will go Unknown, which I have an alert looking for.  Ideally, that should let everyone know that the server's not being monitored and they'll have to keep an eye out until it comes back in.

The issue is, once tripped, the monitor doesn't seem to go back to Up until they restart the SNMP service--But the service itself shows good from the OS, and when I click List Resources I get all the info I ask for.  It's just that the monitor says Unknown.

Why does that happen?
