I'm brand new to SAM and have just gotten a few alerts set up for some critical services I want to monitor. One of them has a tendency to hang and stop working, but in Windows task manager it still shows as running. Is this something SAM can detect and restart, even though it never actually shows as being stopped? I have the alert and action set up, but I'd like to know before hand if possible whether this will detect the problem.

Try Event Log Monitor in SAM, when the service is hung it would definitely log that information, find the event id for the same and monitor it Windows Event Log monitor -
How do you determine the service is not working properly? That's usually a good starting point for determining what you need to monitor.
