There are methods for installing the IBM Director Agent on CentOS. Without the Director Agent installed the operating system is unaware of the health of the underlying hardware upon which it's running.
The only other way to monitor the server's hardware would be through the use of an out-of-band management card likely utilizing NPM's Universal Device Poller or SAM's SNMP Monitor. If you're looking for crazy ideas, you could install VMware ESXi onto the bare metal and run CentOS as a virtual machine.
The Agent version referenced in that article is very current and still available for download from IBM's website. It may be that you were trying the Platform Agent rather than the Common Agent.
