Who Watches the Watchmen? The Orion Health Page!

Product Manager

As awesome as SolarWinds applications can be at helping avoid a network crisis, sometimes disaster strikes closer to home: in the Orion® Platform itself. You come in to work one morning and click on the web page, only to see an unhandled exception, or you realize you haven’t seen an alert in a suspiciously long time, or you plan an upgrade expecting everything to go smoothly and find yourself stumped by a configuration wizard error. While our awesome support folks are here to help you get past any trouble you might run into, wouldn’t it be great if you had a way to check the health of your SolarWinds environment to prevent a catastrophe?

Well, good news: now you do! Introducing the Orion Health page, designed to help you keep your SolarWinds environment humming along trouble-free. You can go to Settings -> All Settings -> High Availability Deployment Summary (found in the Product Specific Settings section). Once there, you will see a tab called Deployment Health (and don’t worry, even if you don’t use our High Availability product, you still have these options).

pastedImage_0.png

This page has over 70 checks created from analyzing the most common reasons why customers call us. We cover everything from database maintenance to disk space. The best part is, you don’t have to remember to come to this page and run the server health checks regularly—they will run every night along with our regularly scheduled database maintenance. We run specific tests against each server in your deployment. Got an additional web server? A scalability engine? A standby server? We got you covered!

Shhh…

Of course, every environment is different, and we know that some tests might not apply to everyone. For example, we’ll warn you that if your SQL Server is on a VM, that might not be the best setup.  Sometimes resource-intensive applications like SQL don’t play well with shared resources. But if you know that your VM is a beast and can handle whatever we can throw at it, you can just silence that particular check:

pastedImage_0.png

You won’t see it again unless you un-silence it, so your daily view will be only the tests you care about.

There’s a KB for that!

So now you’re using the health page to keep everything copacetic, and you find a failure that you’re not quite sure what to do with.  Well, we’ve got a whole database full of Knowledge Base articles right at your fingertips! Just click on the arrow at the end of the row with the test on it, and a panel will pop up with a description of the test and a link to an article with more info.

pastedImage_0.png

Now that you have this tool at your fingertips, remember that we always welcome your feedback. Think there’s something we could test for that we don’t? Something that needs to be tweaked? Let us know and we’ll be happy to take a look!

This health page does not work on our Orion Platform 2018.2 HF6 deployment. We don't have HA, but the DEPLOYMENT HEALTH tab shows nothing.

Level 12

We don't have HA either, I don't see any way to kick off a manual health check.

Product Manager
Product Manager

You can just select the tests you want, and click "Refresh Check."  It will run them right then and there, no HA Required.

Product Manager
Product Manager

You should have it even without HA - can you try restarting the SolarWinds Administration Service?  If that does not work, please open a support ticket and we'll figure out what's going on.

Level 8

I did restart the service, but it didn't help. Screenshot below.... literally nothing there to select.

I'll open a ticket.

WOW

Level 12

I had to wait about 30 seconds before anything actually showed up.  Thanks!

Level 16

this is part of which platform version?

Level 13

I'm not seeing it either.  I have "High Availability Deployment Summary" under Settings -> All Settings, but don't see anything that looks like health.HA Settings.png

Level 9

This is what I have as well.  No tabs across the top, just this showing my one Orion server.  I am on version 2017.1 though, so guessing this is not in my release?

Level 9

I am seeing this as well 2018.2 HF6

Level 13

I'm on 2017.3.4

Level 8

pastedImage_0.png

Same here.. that's all I get as well. 2018.2 HF2

thanks for the reminder on this one.

Level 11

I have 2017.3.5 and see the same.  Main poller, and nothing else.  Nothing to click on to get any further.  Maybe we are shunned because we are scared to update to 2018.  haha  Although, I've never had a Solarwinds "update" go smoothly and not require Tech Support help or 1-2 days of downtime.  😕

Level 15

Mine looks like your screen shot as well.

Level 12

Could be handy if there was clear way to see silenced checks

Level 9

Same here. I think you need to be on the latest upgrade for this.

The blog post should mention this as a requirement if that is the case.

Level 9

I am getting the same as everyone else even after restarting the services. Went a step further and restarted the server. Still nothing different.

Level 8

This is how mine looks as well.  Does anyone know the fix?

Level 8

I too had this same issue  - It appears to be an issue with Http vs Https... view your site over secure Https and you will get content.

Level 8

That may have worked in your situation, but our deployment is already using only HTTPS, so that is not a fix.

Level 8

I've had a ticket open with support for over a week, no fix as yet.

Level 8

I have tried also using secure https but I am still seeing the same result.  The deployment health tab (or any tab for that matter) is not visible.

Level 8

I assume this is the same for all of your browsers?

Level 8

So I went ahead and uploaded a screenshot, but sorry no deployment health tab.  I noticed that br745 said that they have had a case open with support for a week.  If anyone has seen the fix for this issue can they share in this forum.  Thanks,

That's awesome addition, thanks a million.

Just some additional thoughts:

I would love to see this as a completely standalone tool which runs on a SolarWinds primary engine box as a separate process and has its own separate UI (web-UI or local software app - I don't mind). Sort of completely separate self-monitoring tool with those 75 checks you are talking about. That would be super awesome.

Even better, ability to deploy this self monitoring on another box would be great addition as well. This way I can have completely independent "watcher" who is watching the watcher itself.

by the way, kasaff - are you able to point to any documentation which lists all those 75 checks that are part of it? I am not on the latest addition at the moment and would be great to see what they are. Screenshot is ok as well, but I wanted some hard-core technical info about every check - what it is, why it is done, what to watch out for (i.e. at which point we need to start worrying) and what to do when it reports and issue

This functionality is already available as a Win32 application. It is located under 'C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\ActiveDiagnostics\ActiveDiagnostics.exe'

pastedImage_0.png

Level 9

Not sure if this is what you are looking for.  But, this is what is listed in Active Diagnostic for the tests it runs. In active diagnostics there is a very minimal description of what the test is it gives information about the issue and a link to the KB is there is one.

I'm showing:

Support says:

Hi Frank, Thank you for your time. here is the summary of our Webex session. -navigate the Deployment Health tab. -Notification still there, explain that the notification was not reliable or meaning there's something wrong on the agent.

Level 9

No matter if http or https in use I see:

xxx/Administration/SolarWinds.Administration.HealthPage.Web.healthpage.html  throwing a 404 so apparently IIS doesn't have that page.

Level 12

The check for Database Maintenance is giving the Problem status for the event which occurred 15 days back.

Can we fine tune these alerts to give status for some given number of days?

pastedImage_0.png

Level 9

Just upgraded to 2018.2 HF6 a couple days ago.  Seeing a grey scree as well.  No results.

Have you tried flushing your browser cache and/or a different browser? If you open developer tools in your browser and refresh the page, do you see any errors?

Level 10

same for us:

NPM 12.2

pastedImage_0.png

Product Manager

That error suggests those files are locked and in-use by some process. Do you have antivirus installed on the Orion server? if so, have you defined an exception for the c:\ProgramData\SolarWinds\Orion directory?

Level 10

This is excluded.

Level 10

Tested Firefox too and same issue.

Open Resource Monitor on the server and type in the name of one of the log files on the CPU tab in the Associated Handles field to see what process is holding the file open.

I'll update you tomorrow as heading home for today...

Thanks for your help.

Level 9

Hint to solarwinds: remove this blog post since it doesn't work with the latest version, or provide us with a solution

Level 12

Works for me

Orion Platform 2018.2 HF6, NCM 7.8, CloudMonitoring 2.0.1, NPM 12.3, DPAIM 11.1.0, NetPath 1.1.3

Level 9

Just to check, is yours an updated version from an older backend and NPM?

I've quite recently migrated to a new server so it's essentially a clean install, not including the DB of course.

edit: our versions are SolarWindsOrion Platform 2018.2 HF6, NCM 7.8, CloudMonitoring 2.0.1, NPM 12.3, NetPath 1.1.3

Level 12

I would say so, ca. 4 years of history, just NPM versions below

10.7.4.810
11.0.11.406
11.0.4.397
11.5.25300.254
11.5.35100.62
12.0.15300.90
12.2.5300.360
12.3.5200.837
Level 9

Ok that's good info. Maybe the latest installers do not deploy this page in IIS. Unfortunately my old VM is already deleted so I can't compare to that.

Product Manager
Product Manager

I would recommend deleting the 'SolarWinds NetPerfMon' website in IIS, as well as the 'SolarWinds Orion Application Pool'. Follow that up by deleting the 'C:\inetpub\solarwinds' directory and re-run the 'Website' portion of the Configuration Wizard.

pastedImage_0.png

Level 10

Hi,

Just returned back to work.

Can you confirm that we are talking about the same version in question here? as we are running 12.2.

Also the log above indicates the log is APM? we don't have that module?

Thanks

Product Manager
Product Manager

This is only available on Orion Platform 2018.2 or later which is included with NPM 12.3.

Level 9

Just installed latest HF and let the config wizard redeploy everything to IIS but still no health page.

I just get 404 on the resource Administration/SolarWinds.Administration.HealthPage.Web.healthpage.html
