Hi Mustafa,

That is absolutely not the case.  We have and will continue to invest in WPM which is encompassed in the items listed in this post.

We'd love to hear your feedback on what we're working on for the next version.  Are there any particular features or enhancements you're specifically interested in?  Once we have a beta ready you'll be one of the first to know.

-Craig

Level 14

1 week? 2 weeks? sooner? After 5 months it has to be ready in a week

Level 10

yes Mustafa you're right. 5 months passed but still we can not reach the next version of WPM!!

Level 15

Hey guys,

I see you asking for a new version. We re working on it, unfortunately I do not have more precise timeframe at the moment. But as soon things will be more clear I will update you here on Thwack. In the meantime please let your request and ideas coming.

Thanks!

Peter

Level 14

Hi Peter,

WPM should support web services. All the others similar products have that feature. We can't get rid of HP BPM because of this.

http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/1783

Level 14

Still nothing. I want my money back.We recently upgrade our license to 100.

Level 14

Peter,

It's been almost 9 months since the What we are working section was updated for WPM.  It is understandable that you cannot tell us when the next version will be posted.  However, it would be great if at least we knew was improvements and fixes are in the works. So, please pass the word to the person in charge of the WPM "what we're working on" section.  Thanks

Level 14

Almost one year with no update! What a product! Not a good idea to invest WPM. You have been warned.

Level 15

Hi newkidd2,

you are right! I have updated the list with the latest things we are actively looking at. This should give you better idea, what might be coming down the road.

Peter

Level 15

Hi Mustafa,

I hear you and we are working on next release. I also updated the list above, so to make it reflecting ideas we are working on right now. In the meantime I tried to reach out to you over email, so if you find some time to talk to me, please let me know.

Thanks,

Peter

Level 10

Fantastic list.  We are really looking forward to some of these.  Can't wait to try them out.

Level 10

One feature I don't see on the list that I know I and several others have been looking for is the ability to continue on error?   This is so one test could for example be used to test one particular web page on several nodes.  Say I have 10 nodes serving a page and I just want to make sure that page is working on all 10.   Instead of creating 10 different tests (using up a lot of resources), I just create one test and generate alerts for any of the 10 steps that didn't complete.

Obviously this could cause navigation issues if trying to click on links or use menus on a page that didn't work... But, it should still be possible if just going directly to URLs.

Level 10

Another one I see missing that we would certainly like to see soon.  The ability to use regular expressions.   I'm working on a test right now that I have no way of verifying due to this.    At least I can't figure out how.  I tried doing a image match instead, but as soon as I ran the test (it passed in recorder) it generated an alert and didn't find the match.

I want to verify that this is on a page:      Workers NG:        0

The problem is that that is a table, and the 0 is in a different cell.    So a text match for   "NG:     0" doesn't pass.

In the html, the 0 is even on a different line.

Being able to search against the HTML for /Workers NG:.+?\n.+?>0</s would solve this.

Not really sure why regular expressions aren't something already part of the product.   They are quite useful and available in all other monitoring products we use.

Level 10

I posted in the 'ideas' section a while ago [http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/2505] for the ability to move monitors around to different players without losing the historical metrics and custom thresholds.  If you're taking votes for prioritization that's where I'd go. Especially the historical metrics, that's big.

Level 10

REALLY looking forward to Custom Properties! Please can you make sure these are reflected in AAM as well? Cheers

Level 12

I have been watching this product for some time and I would like to know and hear officially that this product has some sorta road map and at least on someone's radar. We have been looking at Alertsite and Keynote and Gomez ( compuware ) for transactional monitoring/user experience monitoring  on our web pages and while the price point from Solarwinds is a lot easier to sell to my directors then the others mentioned i am a little concerned about the lack of updates and road map.

Level 15

Hi Stephen,

I know it's a long waiting for another release, but we are working on it right now with many good things coming. The list above is accurate and contains features we are investigating and looking at. In the meantime, we are hear you and if you have specific feedback on any part of WPM, please let me know - we can discuss over email or have a call to go to details. Thanks for patience and stay tuned,

Peter

Level 12

Thanks Peter for the revert ... just would like a road map or forward facing outlook on where you guys are going to take this product or where you would like to take this product. I have no feed back as I have no used it but we are looking into web transaction monitoring and web page availability monitoring.

I am using site 24/7 for my availability monitoring and we have been looking at alertsite and gomez for transactional monitoring.

Hi Stephen,

The desire to see a more detailed product roadmap before purchasing is completely understandable.  Our best effort at satisfying this requirement for customers is articulated in the 'What We're Working On' post above.  In other words, the information above is the extent to which we're actually allowed to talk about future development.  For more clarity on what we can and can't disclose, check out this previous post on the Product Blog.

HTH,

Craig

Level 12

Thanks for the responses .. and I totally understand the road map and what you can and not say - figured I would ask anyway ( LOL ).

I would like to know if you guys are looking down the road at web availability monitoring for web pages on top of the transactional monitoring. Like I said above I use site 24/7 for this now and while it does what i need for a decent price and I would hate to use up a transaction to do this .. where its just a check on the correct Http response and if the page is up and down.

For example

HTTP/ HTTPs requests to your website at regular intervals of time to check if your website is accessible. A website will be reported as unavailable if:

  • Website is not accessible.
  • Response time of the website crosses 30 seconds.
  • HTTP Response code of the response is 4XX or 5XX.
  • If the username/password is invalid in the case of authenticated websites.

I think these could be added into what you got now ...

Steve

Level 15

Hi Steve,

for this simple UP/DOWN monitoring of HTTP, we usually recommend Server & Application Monitor. We do not look at the moment on providing this as part of WPM, however we look into options how to better integrate SAM and WPM experience.

Peter

Level 12

Well yes its up and down but more then that .. and to me its more part of WPM then SAM - no diff like site 24/7 , Gomez and Alertsite who bundle transaction monitoring as well as Availability monitoring like I mention above

Doesn't  SAM internally checks the ports on the web server - i would like to check for the correct response code is being returned , making sure the web page responds with in the 30 second threshold thoughput on the page ..and I would like to do this from internet locations.

I can get around this using a transaction but its not cost effect to run it that way and would create load on the player locations which would increase my cost for the cloud servers.

It would be a true differentiator for WPM to apply some form-input intelligence to Flash/Silverlight transactions as well. I know this is outside the realm of HTML, but so is the Web.

Level 9

The new features list is great, but I have seen that this list was published almost 4 months ago, and there´s any update for this module since last June. Are there any plans for a new release soon so we can have arguments to make the annual renewal in terms beyond the technical support?

Level 15

We will update this post in coming days since we are working on the next release right now.

Level 14

We have to see it to believe it!

Level 14

"We will update this post in coming days since we are working on the next release right now"....

Already past two weeks since your last post. I have seen this movie almost a year ago. This is official now. WPM is the worst module.

Note: Nothing personal to you guys. My target is strictly Solarwinds company so called policy.

Level 15

I understand you want to see what is happening with the product. I updated the post with more details. The main direction of next release stays and these are features we are working on.

Level 9

Hey Peter,

What about the user interface ... will it track with the same UI improvements happening on NPM?

For example, the advanced alert windows that use old Windows technology... it is a real pain working in the small email message window that cannot even scroll except by keypad.

Also, not able to see full text in windows when creating Logic, because of old Windows character limitations in a field. Many more but it would be really nice to eliminate all the old Windows tech limitations.

Level 10

Is there any sort of timeframe for these changes that can be given?  Even a loose one?

I'm being asked weekly for updates on this by my team and have to keep referring them to this 4 month old post.

Thanks,

Derek

Also, I'm not seeing the ability to use regular expressions for text matches.   This seems like a really simple one to include and would help us personally out quite a bit.   It's annoying to have to frequently update tests after a roll because a developer decided to for example change the capitalization or spacing on some text.  If conditionals are being added, it seems natural that regular expressions would be added also so information captured on one step could be used in those conditionals on the next step.

Level 14

WPM What we're working on (WWAWO) page list is updated regularly but not the product itself. By doing this a customer will think they are currently working on the updates but they haven't done any updates since (03/05/2013) (Thanks to newkidd2).

I will not be surprised if I hear that Solarwinds will drop support from WPM soon.

Level 14

I re-checked the customer portal, which shows that WPM 2.0 was posted on Nov 15, 2012, and v2.0.1 posted on May 13, 2013. So, it's been about 9 months without getting any upgrades to WPM, only hotfixes.  So, based on these two issues, I'd say that...

  1. I would concur that the upgrade pace has been very slow as it relates to WPM.
  2. It seems that the WWWO page was only updated after repeated requests for news on wnat's in the works for WPM. This is, sadly, evident, on the thread of multiple messages posted right on the WWWO page, almost begging for news.

Both of these are concerning, and make some of us wonder about SW's commitment to WPM.

Level 15

We are working on WPM and plan a next release. All of the features mentioned in the What We're Working On post are on our radar and being implemented or analyzed. I personally would also like to have the new release out as soon as possible. I contacted you over email with request for feedback on some of these features we are working on.

Level 15

I think most people within the SolarWinds realm know I am a huge proponent of the suite of products.  However I like many others have lost faith in SolarWinds backing of this product.  It has been 9 months since even a minor update was released.  We keep being told things are coming.  I happen to live in MIssouri which is known as the ShowMeState.  Until I see a beta, screen shots, or something other than a 4 month old this is what we are working on post I'm not believing it.

Level 14

Please create an idea for this.

Level 12

I did its ready to be voted on ... not that it really matters as I don't see any movement here with this product or maybe its the lack of developers to work on this product - sad to say I feel my investment was a waste

Level 14

Can you post the URL?

Level 12
Level 14

I already shared this idea all my friends in thwack. Give me a couple of days.

Level 9

Hey Peter,

We are pushing the limits of our WPM now... we could use some new tricks. Do you not have some idea about beta at this point?

UI changes? goto meeting? anything?

Level 12

any update yet - my original request was back in December and i see a lot of its coming stay tuned but I see nothing other then talk.

SAM 6.1 (recently released) supports Web Services monitoring for things such as JSON/XML and SOAP.

Level 12

20 days still no updates - I am glad I only purchased a small foot print of this product will be looking at alertsite and gomez again.

Level 14

Welcome to my world.

Level 12

its actually to bad because we were going to increase our license count due to some other business units interested in some small transactional stuff

About the Author
Let me introduce myself.  My name is Craig McDonald, and I come from the land of video games and stock trading, sprinkled with identity management, and, by the way, I like to write.  Checkered past, you say?  How did you end up in network management, you ask?  Perfectly valid questions; I will connect the dots for you and it will all make sense shortly. I studied journalism at the University of Texas at Austin where I had the opportunity to write for The Daily Texan and Texas Monthly.  Upon graduation I was faced with two options: move to a small town and start my career at an even smaller newspaper, or make a home in Austin and see where this crazy tech town would take me.  I chose the latter, and ended up working in support and managing QA for a popular MMORPG called Ultima Online (this was before WoW was a sparkle in Blizzard's eye). After a few years of policing the haXXorZ, overseeing a few in-game weddings, and shipping several expansion skus, I decided it was time for a change.  I remember the advice from one of my journalism professors when I asked about pursuing a graduate degree; his suggestion, "Go to business school!"  I heeded his advice, got accepted to the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas, and started working on my MBA. While finishing my MBA at McCombs, I was presented with an opportunity to work for a company that developed online trading software (Charles Schwab, formerly CyberTrader).  This may seem a stretch from video games, but the client/server infrastructure and the uptime requirements for an MMORPG and a securities trading engine are quite similar.  Although the content and use cases are obviously very different, both require fast connections and the ability to allow users to log into the service at any time.  My next career move was into the enterprise software arena where I worked as a product manager for Sun Microsystems in the Identity Management space. Fast forward to today, I'm your newest product manager at SolarWinds.  I will be managing Toolset, VoiP, and eventually the Kiwi products.  Outside of the SolarWinds 'Borg' (assimilation is swift and definitive), I keep busy with my lovely wife, two beautiful kiddos, and a pug named Marley.  When they go to bed, I'm either watching a movie, reading a book (working on Atlas Shrugged, and it is work, indeed), or staring at the red circle of death on my XBOX 360.
