What We Are Working On For NCM After 7.3

Level 18

After the release of NCM v7.3 and service releases NCM v7.3.1, and v7.3.2, we have been working on another bulk of features. Here they are:

Enable Config Download and Upload with TFTP and FTP in the webpage.

Hi leinhard,

TFTP is fully functional in the Web UI, but FTP is a feature request.

I'd like to see enhancements to the Compliance part of the product.    I think its falling behind a bit.  For instance, one thing I'd like to see is the ability to select nodes more along the line of the Dynamic Query Builder in the new web-based report writer...   So I could do things like this:   select nodes where vendor "contains" 'cisco' AND ((CustomProp1 = 'foo') or (CustomProp1 = 'bar')).   That way we'd have more flexibility in producing reports.   The current dynamic selection is ok, but not very flexible.   If I try and accomplish the above I either get:

         Vendor is *cisco*

and    CustomProp1 is foo

and    CustomProp1 is bar

which CustomProp1 can't be both 'foo' and 'bar'.  If I change the 3rd line's 'and' to an 'or' I'm thinking that it would either be true when 'vendor is cisco AND CustomProp1 is foo', or simply when 'CustomProp1 is bar', whether or not the vendor is Cisco.   If it does do what I want then it would be violating the precedence of logical operators.   I could probably stick more "vendor is *cisco*' in there after the 'or', but thats getting ugly.   I think consistency across the platform for where you do dynamic selections would be nice.

And while we're talking about dynamic selections, to the best of my knowledge there is no way to leverage the "Group Membership"s that you might have established.  Would be nice!!

On my wishlist would also to be able to make policy reports based on the devices capabilities, or for the ability to not report based on something.   A simple one for instance would be SSH.  If a device is SSH capable, I would like to be able to make sure its configured right.   Not sure of a good way to do this, whether there is an SNMP field that could be queried or simply checking to see if k9 is in the image name?   But, if it's not, I'd rather it just report to me that its not SSH capable and not report on things like "ip ssh version 2" missing from the config, or that "transport input ssh" is not on the VTY's.    So, I'd both like to be able to have a simple "SSH Capable" checkbox, and if a device is SSH capable, report on the configuration of the SSH.    Same thing for SNMPv3 with encryption.   If it is capable of doing SNMPv3 encryption, I'd like to be able to check that the encryption is configured right for the platform.  ie: if it can support AES 256, check against that, but if its only capable of AES 128, only check against that rule..   Not sure how to accomplish this, whether there is something Orion already polls that tells us this stuff, or if we'd need to be able to establish our own way of figuring out the capabilities, but it would be nice!

This is a pretty important part of NCM and I would hate to see it fall by the wayside...

Hmm..  Just thought of another feature I'd like.   When you're testing a rule in the NCM compliance section and it says your policy is violated even though you don't think it should be.  Below it it says, in this case at least,

+ Config Block - Start Line: line vty 0 4  Line Number: 226

    Pattern  XXX was not found

It would be really nice if it told you the end line of the config block too.  I could swear my regexp is correct, but I'm not sure what lines its looking for it in.   Also, when you click on the "Config Block" line it takes you into the config, in this case to line 226, and shows you it highlighted.  Would be nice for it to highlight the config block altogether.

Hi Craig Norborg,

Thanks a lot for very concrete feedback with sample use cases. This is extremely useful for a product manager like me.

A general update of the Compliance feature is very high on our priority list. We are planning the next regular release and I hope to disclose more details soon (read "in a few weeks").

Jiri

Jiri,

I have been looking for news about the upcoming release of NCM (v7.4).  It seems harder after the Thwack site was modified.  Anyway, in your message to cnorborg‌, you stated (last July) that you "hope to disclose more details.. in a few weeks".  Well, it's been quite a bit more than just "a few weeks".  Can you provide news about what's coming on v7.4?  If there is a page where I should go to get this info, please let me know.  Thanks!

Hi newkidd2‌,

Yes -- we have NCM 7.4 Beta available -- please take a look here: Network Configuration Manager v7.4 Beta2 is Available!.

You are welcomed to subscribe, of course.

Jiri,

Thanks for the link for the NCM 7.4 beta.

However, please, ask the Thwack website developers to make it easier to find.  As a matter of fact, they already have a link for beta right under the Network Configuration Manager page.  However, when I click on the BETA link (Network Configuration Manager Beta), it takes me to a different link, where there is no activity whatsoever.  The same goes for the other SolarWinds products, so I humbly submit that the new site has made it a bit more difficult to find what we need.  Please, pass on this concern to the website developers, so they'll take corrective action.  Again, many thanks and have a great day.

Thanks for the feedback -- will forward it to the right guys.

Hey newkidd2,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the thwack upgrade. You can actually see the activity in that group by clicking on Content:

If you don't see that much activity there is probably because users tend to start discussions in the product forum instead of the beta group.

maria.bungau‌,

Many thanks for your reply and clarification; I wholeheartedly understand and agree with these.  However, it would also be best if the product manager added a link to the Network Configuration Manager v7.4 Beta2 is Available! page, like those available for User Device Tracker Beta and Network Performance Monitor Beta.  That would make it much easier for Thwackers like me to find out what's happening and avoid need for additional inquiries.  Many thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
