What We Are Working On For NCM After 7.2

Level 18

To receive updates on the NCM roadmap, JOIN thwack and BOOKMARK this page.

After the release of NCM v7.2, we have been working on the next release. Here is our "hot list" of things we are currently working on. Your comments, feedback and specially participation in Beta releases are more than welcomed.

  • Merge NCM and NPM databases
    • Optimize the DB schema.

    • Account limitations must be applied to NCM jobs.

    • Use Core node management page to add/remove devices from NCM.

    • In the discovery wizard, allow users to choose whether to import newly discovered nodes into NCM.

    • The database connection settings will be the same for NCM and Core/NPM (e.g. password etc.).

  • Improve th EoL/EoS feature:
    • Improve matching reliability for EoL/EoS.
    • Include more information in EoL/EoS data. (Candidates: End of Software Maintenance, Replacement Part Number)
  • Create a new version of the configuration management page.
  • Move config snippets from Win32 to the Web UI.
  • Enhance the flexibility of the device templates so that more devices can be supported by NCM.
  • Move to SWISv3.
  • Support for Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • Various small fixes and enhancements including but not limited to:
    • Retrieve OS version from IBM BNT switches.

Disclaimer: Comments given in this forum should not be interpreted as a commitment that SolarWinds will deliver any specific feature in any particular time frame. All discussions of future plans or product roadmaps are based on the product teams intentions, but those plans can change at any time.

Adding sort options to configs would be nice for start vs run.  Also check if lines exist in order on compliance rules.  Telling where the discrepancy is in the file would be nice.

Hi,

The EoL/EoS feature already is available in NCM and it doesn't need Internet connection to work.

The comparison criteria regular expressions should be changed to POSIX regex processing.  This would be a huge plus for consistency and allowing downloads of configs based on changes to work as intended.  I have built some complex regex's that tend to break things more than exclude due to the inconsistency.

Hi @cvachovecj

As seen I have posted a feature request for NCM, (http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ideas/2615) however the development really lies with Alert manager. Can you advise if/how I can get the development request to the right people if not already?
I am really keen to get this in place and it would seem like it would not be too complicated to implement?

Greg,

I think the best would be creating an idea for NPM as it shares the feature requests with Core, too.

Thanks Jiri, I'll do so!

Hi Jiri,

If Hardware Health is being monitored on an NCM node, couldn't we use the Model value to better match EoL/EoS ?

Hi Deltona,

With the improvement we plan the matching should be exact. Stay tuned .

Hello,

It's been over 5 months since NCM 7.2 was released, and yet I have not noticed any postings about even BETA releases for NCM vNext.  I understand that SolarWinds cannot commit or even estimate about date for the vNext version.  Still, I for one, would like a a bit curious about not seeing even BETA versions like what we see for NPM, which is already on its fouth BETA.  So, I would appreciate some sort of update from SolarWinds as to where they are regarding NCM vNext. I am guessing that many fellow Thwackers feel the same.  Thanks in advance.

Hi newkidd2,

NCM team has been working on the items from the list at the top of the page. As you can imagine, an item like DB merge is a big chunk of work for both development and QA. The release also includes a considerable changes in user interface -- all that must be prepared thoroughly. Stay tuned; the Beta is not far.

Jiri

Jiri,

Will there be a rollback button included with the release?  IE if there are severe performance issues seen?  I am just curious about this as, I would want to weigh heavily on the positives versus negatives of the merge.

I believe the safest rollback option possible is a DB backup. If you are asking whether the next release is going to support also the old mode (separate NCM and NPM databases) -- then no; only one DB.

Jiri,

NCM v7.3 was posted almost 2 months ago, but the "What we're working on" page has not been updated.  I would like to know what's on the works post v7.3. Thanks.
