Virtualization Manager - What We Are Working On

Level 13

To receive updates on the Virtualization Manager  roadmap, JOIN thwack and BOOKMARK this page.

We are currently working on Virtualization Manager 6.2 and beyond.  Some of the items we hope to deliver:

  • Stand-alone Virtualization module on Orion Platform. Once installed, you have a "Home" and "Virtualization" tab no NPM or SAM required, though they continue to ship with the virtualization support they have today.
  • Application stack integration and visualization (e.g. visual mapping through the entire application stack to help identify root cause of performance and availability issues)
  • Management resources to allow users to take simple actions in their virtual environment (e.g. Start/Stop/Reboot a VM, Take recommended resource correction (increase/decrease and reboot) as recommended by VM Sprawl, Take/Delete a snapshot)
  • Better handling of Hot Fix installs for VMAN Appliance
  • Add Costop % Counter (VMware)
  • Out-of-the-box (OOTB) reports for VMAN on Orion
  • Port remaining VMAN alerts to Orion
  • Capture per VM HBA and per VM NIC data
  • Add SAM Template for VMAN to SAM for monitoring VMAN (aka "who watches the watchmen")
  • Support for VMware Tags
  • Licensing usage and upgrade messaging improvements
  • Support for vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA)

Was looking for some comparison to Virtualization Manager and VMware VCOPS product?

Hey chrispaap -- a question about this line:

  • Management resources to allow users to take simple actions in their virtual environment (e.g. Start/Stop/Reboot a VM, Take recommended resource correction (increase/decrease and reboot) as recommended by VM Sprawl, Take/Delete a snapshot)

Does that mean that the current release does *not* allow for actions to be taken against monitored virtualization environments?  I was under the impression that you could, however I'd be happier if you couldn't as the virtualization team is concerned about security once we roll VMan into a production environment in a few weeks.

Level 13

That is correct, in the current version of Virtualization Manager you do not have the ability to take management actions as described.  The idea behind this would be you could delegate this permission and not everyone would have this ability by default.

Level 14

Perfect.  In spite of it being less functionality, that is exactly what I needed right now.  (I bet you don't hear that too often!)

Level 13

That is definitely something I do not hear often!!

Hey Chris!

I was just wondering if you had any plans to also expose statistics from the vSphere Flash Read Cache feature? Would be nice to see cache hit ratios, etc, when looking at storage/vm stats.

Also, along these lines are you planning support for other third-party caching products such as PernixData FVP?

Cheers!

Hey Ben

We are always looking to expand our feature set and I would be interested in talking to you further about your use cases.  Also, have you been to the Virtualization Manager Feature Requests forum, where you can add features for other users to vote on?

Level 12

so we are looking at this product to help with some reporting and oversight into our VM environment - we have a few other Solarwinds products to and like how it ties into the NPM console as well  - we are also looking at Vmturbo as someone in our org downloaded a trial - any documentation on how you guys differ , why you guys are better in this space ...

Level 7

When do you expect to work on the Virtualization ADDon for Citrix XEN Server?

Level 7

Is the EMC XtremIO on the roadmap ? are you planning to do so?

Level 12

very difficult process

Level 8

As general request, would love more content/abilities geared towards Hyper-V. Several features are only available for VMware. I'm a huge fan of this product regardless!

Ryan

You will see as Virtualization Manager evolves that we will bring more parity for the features that apply to both VMWare and Hyper-V.  Are there any particular Hyper-V abilities that you had in mind ?

Level 13

From the Virtualization Manager side not in the immediate future.  I do know that Xtreme IO is listed on the What We are Working on page for Storage Manager.

I am just wondering if there is going to be any support for vCloud director going forward?  Currently its a huge minus for Solarwinds that I cannot capture Org level issues and report that to customers.  Is this something that you are looking at implementing?

Level 13

vCloud Director is not on VMANs immediate roadmap we do have a larger initiative to gather cloud metrics starting off with AWS and then add additional in iterative releases.  This can be found on the What We're Working On Beyond SAM 6.2 (Updated August 23, 2015) .  Although it is on the SAM VMAN will benefit from the inclusion of cloud metrics as well.

Level 7

Is there a timeframe or planned support for the Nutanix Acropolis Hypervisor?
