Server & Application Monitor - What We're Working on Beyond v6.0

Product Manager

To receive updates on the SAM roadmap, JOIN thwack and BOOKMARK this page.

The mad scientists of the SAM team have now fully recovered from the marathon release that was SAM 6.0; and as such it is time once again we turn our attention to the future of SAM. Below is a listing of several of the new features they're brewing up in the laboratory.

  • AppInsight for Exchange
  • JSON Monitoring
  • SOAP Monitoring
  • Independent Thresholds for Node CPU Utilization, Memory Usage, Response Time, and Packet Loss
  • Windows Scheduled Task Monitoring
  • User Definable Sustained Status Condition Alerting
  • Optional Agent for Monitoring Windows Applications and Servers
  • Application stacked integration and visualization (i.e. visual mapping through your entire application stack to help you answer the question, "Why is my app slow?")

PLEASE NOTE:  We are working on these items based on this priority order, but this is NOT a commitment that all of these enhancements will make the next release.  We are working on a number of other smaller features in parallel.   If you have comments or questions on any of these items (e.g. how would it work?) or would like to be included in a preview demo, please let us know!

Best roadmap items ever for SAM! (IMHO). My company interested in all of them. Especially for "JSON, SOAP & Exchange" enhancements. So I would like to be in the Beta & RC phases.

Definitely looking forward to the Exchange stuff.  Our dev team will be happy with JSON support, as well as the task scheduler monitors. Looking forward to the new features!

Great list!  I always look forward to seeing new features.

I can't wait to see the Scheduled Task monitoring.  I could also make very good use of JSON/SOAP endpoint monitoring!  Would that take the form of a new User Experience Component type?

That's the idea for SOAP. JSON however will likely be extending the functionality of the existing HTTP/HTTPS User Experience Monitors.

What I'd like to see is the ability to run scripts on Solaris 11 boxes.  Currently, Orion's admittedly outdated SSH client cannot handshake with the newer OS, so script monitoring is non-existent.  How about updating the underlying technology?

SAM 6.0.1 (available for download now through your Customer Portal) includes significant improvements to SAM's SSH implementation used in the Linux/Unix/Nagios script monitors. This includes support for the latest SSH standards, as well as being FIPS compliant. I recommend you download the SAM 6.0.1 Service Release and see if this resolves your issues monitoring your Solaris 11 machines with SAM.

We need functional Linux service monitoring for Tomcat.

Is "Application stacked integration and visualization" going to make it into the 6.1 release?

  • Optional Agent for Monitoring Windows Applications and Servers

What do you mean for this?

No. Unfortunately It will not be ready in time to make the SAM 6.1 release.

It means an option piece of software that can be installed on your Windows server/s as an alternative to SNMP or WMI.

Can you speak to where it is on the roadmap.  That is going to be a very important feature for our monitoring strategy.

What is the latest update on this feature?

  • Application stacked integration and visualization (i.e. visual mapping through your entire application stack to help you answer the question, "Why is my app slow?")

It's something we began working on late in the SAM 6.1 release, but as you can imagine this is not a small endeavor. I will be updating the "What We're Working on Post" sometime next week to reflect the items we are currently working on since the release of SAM 6.1. This particular item will appear in that post as well.

I assume this feature did not make the 6.1 release, so is this something still be worked on?

  • Optional Agent for Monitoring Windows Applications and Servers
