Server & Application Monitor - What We're Working on Beyond v5.5

Product Manager

The dust is still settling after the blowout success of the SAM 5.5 release earlier this week, but that doesn't mean it's time to rest on our laurels. In fact we're hoping the next release is even bigger than the last! With that said, below is a list of some of the bigger items the mad scientists in the lab looking at cooking up.

  • Improvements in SQL Server Database Monitoring
  • Server Asset & Inventory Management
  • Real-Time Windows Event Log Viewer
  • Statistical Baselining with Automatic Recommended Threshold Calculations
  • Disk I/O Performance Metrics for Monitored Processes and Services
  • Web Services Monitoring for SOAP & JSON
  • Host Header Support for HTTP/HTTPS User Experience Monitors
  • Update all Remaining Charts to New Charting Library
  • User Auditing of SAM Configuration Changes and Remediation Actions
  • Additional macros for script monitors
  • Reduce product license key management overhead associated with major version upgrades and maintenanc...

PLEASE NOTE:  We are working on these items based on this priority order, but this is NOT a commitment that all of these enhancements will make the next release.  We are working on a number of other smaller features in parallel.   If you have comments or questions on any of these items (e.g. how would it work?) or would like to be included in a preview demo, please let us know!

I'm excited.  You guys have been knocking the ball out the park with some of these additions. 5.5 introduced some much needed features, and it's made a lot of folks happy around my office (especially that mount point monitoring).  I'm looking forward to the new features coming up too. Threshold recommendations could be a killer feature, that's often something that can take some time to understand in a new environment, and configuring alerting.

I also love the mount point monitoring.  Was not immediately obvious that I had to switch from SNMP to WMI but I understand why.  Here are two thing that are not cool:

1.  I have to delete all of my historical info for the node when I do this.

2.  I no longer have L2/L3 topology info without the SNMP monitoring component.

Perhaps too quick to judge on #2.  Looks like it is populating.

Looking forward to #4 - Statistical Baselining with Automatic Recommended Threshold Calculations

Real-time event log - thank you!

Web services - I will be curious to see the implementation of this.  This could be huge for us.

Auditing - by remediation - are you talking about service restarts, server reboots?  If so - Excellent!

Keep up the good work and thanks for listening!

Yes, this will include auditing of service restarts through the Service Control Manager, server reboots, and other actions taken within the SAM web interface.

Does User Auditing of SAM Configuration Changes and Remediation Actions mean if you provide other members administrative privileges in SAM you can see exactly what they have changed or done to the setup?

Yes, that's essentially what we're aiming towards.

Outstanding!

- Statistical Baselining with Automatic Recommended Threshold Calculations

sounds too good to be true!

I'm curious what is meant by: "Improvements in SQL Server Database Monitoring"

Version 5.5 has SQL monitoring and I'm having a little trouble getting fully working. This post makes me think there currently are known limitations/issues. Can someone point me to an overview of the current situation and eleborate what will be added to the next version?

This refers to improvements we plan to make in respect to discovery and initial setup/configuration of SQL server monitoring. We also hope to expand upon the depth of information we're currently collecting in SAM today. I'll be posting a follow-up blog post here on Thwack which will provide more detailed information as we get closer to releasing this feature in an upcoming beta.

I like the idea of "Statistical Baselining with Automatic Recommended Threshold Calculation" and SOAP/JSON monitoring. Its refreshing to see that your team continues to improve the product based on customer feedback. Keep up the good work chaps!
