SAM 6.8 What's New Part 1 - AppInsight for Active Directory

Product Manager
Product Manager

SAM 6.8 is now available - Following up to our previously released AppInsight for SQL, Exchange and IIS... The latest installment of AppInsight is here and it wants to make your life easier when it comes to monitoring Active Directory. In addition to performance counters and event logs, detailed information about Replication, FSMO Roles and Sites is provided out-of-the-box

To get started there are a couple ways to get AppInsight for Active Directory applied to your domain controller nodes:

You can either use "List Resources" on a node you know to be a domain controller or you can run a network sonar discovery and we will find your DCs for you!.

Perf-counters and events are still here but we took the time to add some new ones and also improve the grouping presentation. User and Computer Events, System Events, Replication Events, Policy Events and Logon Events are all neatly grouped together to make it easy to find what you are looking for.

Replication: If replication isn't working, your Active Directory isn't working. Keep an eye on replication and get alerted if anything goes wrong. In addition to status we are representing direction and site location. You can also expand any given DC to see more detail about it's configuration.

FSMO Roles at a glance: When something is wrong with a particular DC it can be helpful to know what roles it holds. Hover over the pill to expand the role description. Filters are also available at the top of the resource to allow you to focus on servers of a particular type of role.

Site Details: This widget provides a detailed overview of your sites including a view into related Links and Subnets. The widget also allows for quick searching to zero in on a specific item.

Per the SAM licensing model, when using AppInsight for Active Directory, 50 component monitors count against your licensed number of component monitors per server.

Man this is hard to track down... 50.. good lord! looks awesome, though

Sorry for the trouble tracking down the license count... But glad you are liking the new AppInsight!

I just updated to SAM 6.8. When I click "list resources", it just spins (doesn't time out or anything) on the following screen:

pastedImage_0.png

I cannot list resources on any of our nodes. I've tried several.

I can list resources on our DCs with no problem when logged into our main poller.

is this a known bug?

Edit: I have Case 00279338 open with support for this.

Also getting this in AppStack on all nodes:

Thanks for the update. We'll keep an eye on the ticket internally but feel free to post back here with the outcome.

Ryan, I am checking on this... Will message you directly.

Enabling this took SAM down for me for some reason.  I'm on the latest everything; SolarWinds, Microsoft (Svr2016 PE, and SQL Svr w/SQL 2017) fully patched, dedicated OSE, lots of RAM and vCPUs, SSD storage.  Enabling this must have exceeded a license count, but I get the dreaded:

Unexpected Website Error

There was no response from the SAM Business Layer located at "net.tcp://orionserver:17777/orion/apm/businesslayer".

when I attempt to view my licenses among other things related to SAM.  OSM shows all services running.  Really frustrating.  This product should be more stable.  I have ticket # 00285884 open waiting for a response.

dfollis i just got my issue resolved a couple days ago. Not sure if this will help you, but I ended up having to run config wizard on every poller. I was under the impression that you only had to run it ONCE at the END of an upgrade...like their own documentation says

jvb can you please get the documentation for upgraded updated? when to run the config wizard is still unclear for many people i feel like.

This is disappointing:

Hello, Ryan. Did you use the Orion Installer to upgrade polling engines? If you navigate to Use the SolarWinds Orion Installer in the Success Center and click Install or upgrade Orion Platform products, see Task 5: Upgrade scalability engines that describes how the Orion Deployment Upgrade Wizard updates Additional Polling Engines, Additional Web Servers, and HA backup servers automatically. The Installer will notify you if any of the servers cannot be reached. Hope this helps.

I did use the Orion installer. I was mainly going off this video that states you only need to run the config wiz once at the end of an upgrade:

Hi Ryan, just to let you know in the 3 years since that video has been published, we have made a lot of investment into the install/upgrade process. It's very different now! Have you seen any of the latest documentation that we have available regarding the new installer?

Thanks for the feedback Ryan... We are looking at some ways to make mass application of those templates easier but for now it is not possible to group assign AppInsight templates.

Level 10

Is the AppInsight template available for use on SAM 6.7? Our servers are running Windows 2012 R2 and is a roadblock for upgrading to the newest versions of NPM and SAM.

No, SAM 6.8 is required to use AppInsight for Active Directory. I understand you may not yet have 2016 Server or above available but if the roadblock is just centered on the pain of migration aLTeReGo wrote up a very useful post about pivoting to a new OS for your Orion environment: How to Migrate Orion to a New Server With Zero Downtime

it's kind of a downer;  in my sessions I usually just have discoveries set up for each appinsight type, and drop the server names for those groups into the discovery or use the AD discovery option to select the nodes from a checklist.  On the screen to select manual or automatic import of results, choose automatic and set up the filter, under the applications tab, to have only the AD appinsight selected.
