Configuration Wizard failing after install from 2018.2 - case opened on the customer portal
After an hour and a half webex with tech support, latest suggestion is revert/restore whilst diagnostics are checked

A reminder to all to make sure you backup the DB and checkpoint VMs, servers

How are we doing here David? Did you get through the configuration wizard?

Level 8

The release notes talk about agents running on and being upgraded to .NET 4.8.  Does this mean all machines where I have deployed the Orion agent will be forced to upgrade to .NET 4.8 as part of this upgrade?  This is also listed as a known issue causing first time login problems after the agent is upgraded.  I'm just trying to figure out how much work I need to do prior to or during the upgrade.

Thanks for sharing your experience, we'll check into the support case details!

this new upgrade looks promising.

Eventually but it wan't smooth sailing.

I refreshed the page which then wouldn't load so went to the server directly, the config wizard logs said it had finished but nothing was working. reran the config wizard but same result so rebooted the server.

This gave me the web console back but all the additional's were failing to perform the installation, hit retry and it got better and eventually it completed.

I do still have to copy the installers folder over manually to any remote servers but I've had to do this for the last 3-4 upgrades so no big surprise there.

Level 9

Config Wizard issue was resolved by excellent tech support - issue was due to a couple of View rows in the DB that contained no resources!

Removed these prior to attempting the install again and this time it all went smoothly.

Up and running system now, though none of our NetPath probes have received an update since before the upgrade and our NCM Nightly Config Backup job failed to complete.

Still working on the ticket, and the support has been great so far

Agents in the latest 2019.4 release require .NET 4.8. The Agents self-satisfy their own system requirements when automatic updates are enabled (default behavior). Any update to the Windows operating system causes some initial delay to the startup. This note was added so that users were not caught off guard the next time those machines rebooted, assuming they were attempting to remote desktop into them immediately after.

If .NET 4.8 is already pre-installed in your environment prior to upgrading to 2019.4 releases, then none of this is really applicable. The Agent updates itself normally but does not need to install .NET, since it's installed already.

Level 10

We upgraded our QA silo and we have have had issues with the license store getting corrupted.  I've been working with support on this.

Re: NPM 12.5 upgrade - installation issues and corrupt license store

I'm not sure if we had something environmental prior to the upgrade but we are not going to upgrade our production silo until we understand what is causing this.  The .Net Framework 4.8 requirement was also a bit unexpected.  We are going to test .Net Framework with 12.4 before we upgrade; then deploy .Net Framework prior to 12.5.

Product Manager
Product Manager

This post pertains to 2019.4 releases. NPM 12.5 runs on Orion Platform 2019.2.

Level 9

Update: NetPath probes are working again. The agent hadn't updated on the primary engine so had to manually update it. Just the NCM jobs that are taking forever, and msmq files appear to be getting stuck on the polling engines so having to manually clear them out. Still working on the ticket to resolve this, but getting there

Level 10

Is platform 2019.4 still compatible with the old agent version 2.2.0.860 ?

Until now the agent only required base .net 4.0 , why such a big jump?

Product Manager
Product Manager

The agent should continue to operate with reduced functionality in compatibility mode. The reduced functionality means that you may not be able to take advantage of any new functionality provided by modules you own which rely upon the Agent. Core features and functionality though, such as CPU, Memory, response time, etc. should continue to operate normally in this mode.

The agent previously utilized .NET 3.5.1 which has since reached end-of-life. There are numerous security-related bugs that have been addressed in 4.8, as well as a host of other enhancements and improvements which are advantageous for all customers to upgrade.

I'm somewhat shocked to see the deprecation notice for NCM Vulnerabilities feature I can't believe that the changes to accept JSON over XML

Level 13

I've seen that feature yesterday working over XML. Didn't noticed JSON (maybe blind ).

The upgrade has caused our system to be very unstable. Support keeps telling us to wait for a patch, but support is unable to contact the developers to find out when said patch is available. We replaced a dll file from the buddy drop, but it did not help.

What is the stability issue you're having? Do you have a case number?

Level 10

00426322 is the case,

We get a lot of jobengineworkerv2 processes running, unresponsive website and server os. Sometimes restarting SW services resolves the issues. Other times the server is unresponsive with low CPU and we have to gracefully restart via VMware.  Just upgraded to new Server 2019 VM's and a new DB version so we changed a lot at one time. Got the Deployment Health tab working just a few minutes ago with this guide. Now working through the issues we find.

we have 166 issues but the top 3 are:

  • RabbitMQ service is installed and running  -- This is missing from all the polling engines. Why? Does it not install? Support could suggest fixing it after we collected several rounds of support data.
  • Check if Database Maintenance works properly -- Sent to our DBA
  • Database index fragmentation check -- Sent to our DBA

Is Rabbitmq supposed to be installed on APE's? I have not found an answer on the web yet.

Product Manager
Product Manager

Thank you, that was just the information I needed. The issue you are encountering appears to be addressed in Hotfix 1. We hope to have that available next week, so please keep a close eye on your Customer Portal.

Level 7

My upgrade went quite well. I didn't see any issues.

Level 9

Same question as Andrew above.  Is Rabbitmq supposed to be installed on APE's ??

Installed HF1 yet under deployment health it is saying service not installed which it is not.  However can I see it has created the directories for RabbitMQ on the APE and appeares under add/remove programs but I cannot get the service to install and not sure now if it should be.

Product Manager
Product Manager

RabbitMQ should not be installed on either Additional Polling Engines or Additional Web Servers. RabbitMQ is installed only on the Main Poller, as well as the Main Poller backup when HA is used.

Level 10

HF1 seems to stabilized our environment. Did the permission checker dance for a while on one of the APE's. Seems like the APE permission checker does not set the correct permissions. Used the primary server permission checker output as a guide on how to manually set the permissions on the poller. We installed solarwinds on the E:/ drive on all our servers.

Level 10

We used the centralized upgrade to install HF1, not sure if it handled the solarwinds being installed on E:\ correctly.

Level 11

Deployed Orion 2019.4 with HF1 release, issue in installation and it stuck at SolarWinds TFTPServer Failed - Fatal error during installation. But was able to proceed by using instructions in this article.

Success Center

Not sure why this error is happening, as after deploying main polling engine, we moved to install APE-1 and same error in installation.

Product Manager
Product Manager

Did the permissions checker on the APE fail with any messages? Did you try right clicking and executing as administrator? I can confirm that there should be no difference with how the Permissions Checker functions on the main vs scalabiity engines.

Level 12

Did a fresh installation of 2019.4 with NPM, NCM & NTA modules. Installation went smooth and successful. So far so good. Proceeding with the configurations. Will update more on the go.

Meantime I have seen it was asking to install Log viewer and I have given NO. Just want to if I can do the logviewer installation later point of time.

Product Manager
Product Manager

Log Analyzer can be added at a later time. Note, Log Viewer is the non-commercial version of Log Analyzer.  Is there a particular reason you choose not to install the OLV add-on?

Level 12

I think OLV requires a separate database right. I haven't factored that now, that's why haven't installed it. I am thinking of installing it later based on my syslog and traps requirements.

Product Manager
Product Manager

Orion Log Viewer does utilize a seperate database, but the same database server. It provides a lot of advantages over Orion's legacy Syslog & Trap receivers. Most notably, it's all managed through the Orion web interface, and uses the same web based Alert Manager as the rest of Orion.

Level 16

so if we need to make use of traps or syslog function, now we need to enable the Log Analyzer, correct?

And will be the DB(for Log Analyzer) be created automatically as part of initial setup?

MVP
MVP

You will still have basic syslog/trap management functionality without installing Log Viewer/Analyzer but there are limitations. All management is handled via separate applications on the SolarWinds server (Trap Viewer and Syslog Viewer) and the alerting is handled via those separate tools and don't integrate with the Orion platform alerting. One benefit to legacy syslog/traps is tagging and being able to set up dashboards and queries based on those tags but that will eventually go away when SolarWinds fully deprecate the legacy syslog/trap tools.

I'm not a big fan of tagging being taken away from NPM and only included in Log Analyzer and I think the licensing model is too restrictive, but apart from that it is a definite improvement over the legacy tools.

The Configuration Wizard will prompt you for information about the log database the same as it does for the main database when you install the module.

e.g. the follow steps will appear in the wizard:

1. Configure Orion database SQL server

2. Configure Orion database (use existing or create new)

3. Configure Orion database username/password

4. Configure Orion Log database SQL server

5. Configure Orion Log database (use existing or create new)

6. Configure Orion Log database username/password

If you have NTA, you will be prompted for the flow storage database configuration as well.

Level 16

Thanks...

Level 12

For my new installation, the login page is taking more time to load, but other pages looks fine. What can be the reason for it?

Product Manager
Product Manager

I would recommend reviewing the following post > Orion Core: Resolve Common Slow Website Issues

And specifically the following section.

Symptom: Browsing the Orion Web Console, you get Request Timed Out.

Cause: If the Orion web console was not being used heavily, IIS shuts down the worker process that handles requests from Orion's website every 20 minutes (this is the default value in IIS).

To change the default Values from 20 minutes to 1 full day of 1440 minutes.

Server 2008-2017

  1. Control Panel> Administrative Tools> IIS Manager
  2. Expand out Local Computer
  3. Select Application Pools
  4. Right Click on SolarWinds Orion Application Pool and select Properties (or Advanced Settings for Server 2008)
  5. In the Idle Time-out (minutes) box, type a number of minutes (you can set to 1440 for 1 full day), and then click OK.
Level 10

Is it possible to redirect Orion Log Viewer to different database server? Is there a point in doing so? We were having some issues with DB performance of Orion and I would like to avoid adding more workload to it.

Absolutely! This is something you choose when running the Configuration Wizard.

Just finished 2019.4 HF1. Deployment Health signaling RabbitMQ not installed on APEs.

Level 11

Did you do offline installer and if yes was the Server having internet connection when you installed Orion Platform 2019.4?

Level 12

Yes, I did offline installer, however my server was having internet connection during installation.

I've logged this as a bug and am tracking it internally under SWA-6811. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Level 11

Thanks thats what is observed in 2-3 installations, using 2019.4 offline installer and if Server has internet access the installation is going smooth. Not sure why this behavior ? Logged multiple cases with support awaiting their feedback.
