Presently Patch Manager presents eight patches for Adobe Flash and four for Shockwave, differentiating between the EXE and MSI versions of the installer. As a result, to upgrade Flash we must push six patches to each machine, and in the best case four of these will initially fail, causing concern from users and generating Helpdesk calls. The error is "The software change returned error code 0x80240017 (-2145124329)"
Adobe somehow manages to release patches for SCUP which don't cause this problem. They do all appear to use the MSI install source.
Researching the error I found an old thread wherein users of Shavlik Patch had similar issues, and Shavlik's team was able to resolve the problem by updating their detect/deploy logic for this updates.Flash 18.0.0.160 update error The Software chan... | Shavlik User Community
This suggests that it's possible to streamline the Adobe patching as both Adobe and other third-party patch competitors are able to resolve the issue. I propose that Patch Manager do similarly.
