In our environment, and many environments Ive worked in previously, knowing the network utilization of a VLAN, and being able to see the top VLAN to VLAN traffic, is more important than endpoint traffic.
We are a medical and computing research organization that is affiliated with a University where we split the various labs into separate VLANs, currently 92 of them. We would like to be able to see traffic on a VLAN basis so we can back charge the labs that are doing research in the building based on the amount of traffic they utilize. We can also use this to see where we need to plan for growth or where we should add additional up-links, etc.
Currently the work around seems to be creating IP Address Groups. This is a tedious manual process as VLANs often change, being removed or added as labs move into and out of the building, and sometimes VLANs get expanded, etc.
FWIW we are 100% Cisco environment.
