Allow greater granularity for Persistent DNS Resolution

Currently, DNS and Netbios name resolution have a minimum number of days to wait until the next DNS lookup.  In our network our DHCP server appends the machine name of the device that obtains an IP address to the DNS entry when it hands out an address, allowing us to better track traffic sources.  The minimum number of days Orion allows when using Persistent resolution, is 1 day. Lease times in our wireless networks are 4 hours, so the displayed data in Netflow may be incorrectly displayed for at least 16 hours after a lease expires. This causes confusion while troubleshooting and lack of faith in the product by users unfamiliar with how DNS is resolved by Orion.

I'm requesting that the default amount of time for DNS resolution when using Persistent DNS be changed from days to hours, allowing administrators to set the interval that matches their environment.

  • It's a good idea.  Wireless devices roaming across an organization can easily show up in areas where a new IP address is required.  Particularly if they're also roaming across SSID's (which really isn't "roaming" so much as "changing networks based on criteria", like security-capabilities or needs).

However, that DOES create a lot more churn in the DNS / IPAM environment; SW ORION SQL database might be impacted negatively by a big increase in changes in devices' DNS.

    Hopefully not!
