update top discards and errors view

could the "top discards and errors" view please be updated to also include a total packets column or total percentage.

while it is a good to see what's happening or when something has high errors or discards, it might only work out to be a small % of the total number of packets and needs to be able to be compared with the total volume as part of the assessment.

  • I'm afraid I do not have more to share on this right now.

  • cobrien

hi, would like to hear either publicly or privately if there was still some interest in this. cheers

  • Hi guys

I know you cant talk about it here but could someone email me at some stage email me and let me know how this is going?

  • Unfortunately we don't comment on specific release contents or dates.  I do have some early mockups I'd like to get your opinion on though. emoticons_happy.png

I'll shoot you an email to line up a time.

  • Hi cobrien

is there any update on this idea. could it be considered for v12 or 12.1 etc?

    kind regards

    andrew

  • Aha!  Actually we've been thinking about this sort of thing quite a bit lately and I can't believe I didn't think of it in context of this feature too.  I agree this is the right way to approach it.

  • i think it would be good to maybe put a poll out with some options and see what the wider solarwinds community thinks?

i myself am not worried about the size or an extra column. my focus is getting good high level views of the data and being able to quickly analyse and make sence of it. emoticons_happy.png

i personally like option 1 and but would also like to be able see in another resource/view

    Node

    Interface

Receive Errors - Total received error packets expressed as a simple integer count.

Receive Discards - Total received discard packets expressed as a simple integer count.

Receive Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Errors - Total Transmit error packets expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Discards - Total Transmit discard packets expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

    or like option 1

    Node

    Interface

Receive Errors - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Receive Discards - Expressed as a percent of total received packets

Receive Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Errors - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Transmit Discards - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Transmit Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

-having two options might allow people to be able to choose a simple view or a more detailed view

-or why not have a couple of different template options out there and let the user decide what will better suit them

on the flip side i'm thinking a bit out loud here but is it possible to be able to add a option box at the top of the view that allows people add or remove the stats columns so they can customise it themselves to what they want to see or not see? sort of similar to what zackm is saying

  • My $0.02 - One thing this job has taught me is that there is always a client that wants more and generally they have a very justified reason for their request.

I would LOVE to see resources in general start moving towards the "more is more" concept. While option 3 above might cover the needs for 90% of clients, why limit the resource on the front end like that?

IMHO, it would be better to allow clients to select their favorite flavor with checkboxes on the "Edit Resource" screen, much like we see in VNQM 'All IP SLA Operations' resource.

  • We should totally do this.

There's a lot of information in the Top errors and discards resource today though so I'm not sure we want to add more.  Currently we have:

    Node

    Interface

    Receive Errors

    Receive Discards

    Transmit Errors

    Transmit Discards

For the sake of simplicity, let's say we created a new resource to accomplish this.  I propose including this information (Option 1):

    Node

    Interface

Receive Errors - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Receive Discards - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Transmit Errors - Expressed as a percent of total transmitted packets.

Transmit Discards - Expressed as a percent of total transmitted packets.

Receive Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

I'm not sure all of these numbers are that important.  What about combining some? (Option 2):

    Node

    Interface

Receive Errors & Discards - Expressed as a percent of total received packets.

Transmit Errors & Discards - Expressed as a percent of total transmitted packets.

Receive Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Transmit Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Or even more combined? (Option 3):

    Node

    Interface

Errors & Discards - Expressed as a percent of total received and transmitted packets.

Total Packets - Expressed as a simple integer count.

Seems to me #3 clues you in that you need to investigate without spitting up a ton of numbers on the screen.

    Thoughts?

  • hi rob.hock, what do think? Would this be hard to update?
